>> This used to be a US- run prison, the Parwan detention facility at Bagram Airbase, North of Kabul, Afghanistan at one time held some 1, 700 prisoners. It's now under the control of the Afghan government. And Thursday, that government released 65 remaining detainees, very much to the displeasure of the American military. It says many of the men were Taliban fighters.

>> American authorities say the move poses a threat to Afghan and NATO forces still in the region.

>> The prisoners were reportedly laughing and also smiling as they boarded the bus to leave that prison.

>> Afghan president, Hamid Karzai, ordered the release without trials, arguing there isn't enough evidence to warrant continued detention. Not only that, Karzai has also called the prison a " Taliban producing factory" and has argued otherwise innocent men have been made to hate their country as a direct result of alleged torture during their detention. But the US military says many of the freed men were directly responsible for attacks like these, IEDs that targeted both coalition and Afghan forces, which is why US lawmakers like Republican Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina are calling for cuts to aid for Afghanistan.

This is all of course as US lead troops begin withdrawal from the country after 13 years of fighting. Looking ahead this isn't likely to be the last time the US and Afghanistan governments clash over Bagram detainees. There are still 23 prisoners originally handed over by US forces and an Afghan government spokesperson says those case will be reviewed and more releases could be coming. Thanks for watching.
