## Transcript

Well, this is my fiance. And I'm also her fiance. That's how we know each other. Well, we knew each other before that happened. [ LAUGH ] Correct. Well, we have been together for seven years. It will be actually eight years, almost to the day, when we get married. And we met in college. I am the author of Broke Millennial, as well as the founder of the site, brokemillenial. com. And my main job is to write about money and go talk to people about money. I'm a public high school history teacher. Karen is the breadwinner. But he has the benefits. So, us getting married has basically been a long con for me to get health insurance.

Honestly, for us with the prenup conversation, I know that marriage is romantic but, at the end of the day, it's also a merger of assets. I don't think of prenups as a divorce contract. I think that's where. That's where I almost, that's where my mind went immediately when we started having that conversation. I was like wait, wait a minute like a prenup isn't that for people who don't think they're gonna stay married. But when we talked about it more and you know I did my own research, and we were more open about it. It really does make sense in the sense that if there's so much going on in In a marriage.

And I think to protect one another. I think. is really important and why I was a little more on board as we kept that discussion flowing. I have my own business. If somebody ever sued me, I want to make sure that Joe's assets are protected and my personal assets are protected, and that's separate from you know, Folk Millennial as a brand. But in terms of getting financially naked. Yeah. My first memory of that, was I didn't handle it with a bunch of tact. I remember kind of aggresively asking, " How much debt do you have ?" And this was probably six years or so ago. Yeah, i also wasn't I also wasn't fully aware of where a lot of my student loans were either.

Really, when we started having those conversations, I had to take a more active role in really making sure I knew where those loans were, how much the loans were for. Some advice that I would give to a couple that is in a similar situation to us, is just, the communication is so important. I think that's something that We've always worked on and we've always been really good at. So, just being really open with each other about finances and how we deal with money, I think that's the best piece of advice that I would give someone. Everybody can do money differently. You as a couple don't have to have the same template that we do but I will say, thinking about money as a team does help reduce a lot of the tension because you're not possessive and territorial over your money.

It's a joint effort, it's a team conversation and a little shift for people who ae engaged like we are, one thing we've both started to do is use the word our instead of my So whether we're referring to our paychecks or investing accounts, pensions, savings It's our student loan debt. That, too. There it is. I have said that. I've said, our student loans. So I think just a simple linguistic shift can actually really help start changing your mindset as you're approaching this monumental moment in your life. Your life. [ MUSIC ]
