## Transcript

[ MUSIC ] I was traveling before business school, and I lost my glasses. They cost $ 700 and even though I needed them to see and I was a full- time student, I couldn't justify paying that much for a new pair of glasses. So I went my entire first semester without owning a pair of glasses. And we started talking about this idea about why glasses were so expensive We're looking at an industry, the optical industry, that we thought was broken. It was overcharging. So we thought, what if we could go in here, disrupt this industry and change it and bring down the price of eye wear for everyone? And we thought that that was an inherent good.

[ MUSIC ] Light bulbs started going off and we thought, wow we could do something here that could have big impact. No one really thought about why glasses were so expensive. They thought it was kind of a medical purchase and their eye doctor then led them out to the front of the store. And sold them a pair of glasses and, and they don't think they had any alternatives. By designing our own frames, and developing our own brand, we didn't have the license another company, so we don't pay licencing fees. And then by going direct to our customers online, you avoid the retail mark- up. And we've found that a lot of retailers are marking up glasses between three and five times, what they are paying for it.

We built this company to provide $ 500 products for $ 95. We launched Warby Parker in February 2010. It was baptism by fire. We had the privilege to launch in features in Vogue and GQ. Two days later, we were in daily candy before we had a chance to reach out to them. And we literally got a flood of emails. I mean, orders that we just weren't prepared to handle within three weeks. We ended up hitting our first year's sales targets. Within four weeks we sold out our top 15 styles. It, it was absolute craziness. [ MUSIC ] We were excited by the opportunity to disrupt a massive industry. But we also wanted to create a for- profit organization that actually had a really positive impact.

We think a lot about the billion people on Earth that can't afford $ 95 glasses. So for every pair that we sell, we distribute one to someone in need. We partner with non- profits. They actually have staff that are training low income men and women to start their own businesses selling glasses in their community. So literally, people living on less than $ 0. 4 a day can now afford glasses. And we thought that it was really important that those glasses were actually sold and not distributed for free. We can use glasses to foster economic development and create jobs. And that, at the end of the day, is, is what some fo these poor communities need most.

[ MUSIC ] I think sometimes it takes outsiders to look at an industry and say hey, this is broken, or this isn't working, and to come in and disrupt it. Today I'm gonna be trying on five pairs of glasses from warbyparker. com. I don't have to go to a store? I don't have to pay a lot of money. As you can see, I just got my new glasses. We've been so surprised and so humbled by how much this brand is resonating with folks, and how much pride people take in their glasses. And that they're making You Tube videos and posting photos on line. It's just been amazing. It's been an exciting, thrilling ah, 18 months since we launched them, it's, don't take enough time to, to take a step back and, and think about how far we've come.

Now I feel like we have really a powerful organization and a vehicle to have massive positive impact. If we're able to demonstrate it can be profitable, it can be good. Hopefully we can inspire other entrepreneurs to do the same. It's not about the amount of wealth you can accumulate. Or the amount of profits that you can drive. It, it's about the impact and change that you can create. [ MUSIC ] [ SOUND ]
