## Transcript

All Germany's Martin Kaymer had to do was not epically self- destruct at Pinehurst and squander his five stroke lead in Sunday's final round of the 2014 US Open. Well, Kaymer came through, and then some. The 29 year old turned in a solid final round Sunday, winning by eight shots to become the first German player ever to claim the US Open. But it was his strong start to the tournament that allowed him to cruise to the win. He hit 65 on back to back days to open before understandably regressing with the 72 Saturday. Two Americans finished behind Kaymer, with Erik Compton and Ricky Fowler tying for second.

Last year's winner, Justin Rose tied for 12th this time around, celebrating his birdie on the 18th hole by recreating the famous Payne Stewart fist pump. The last American winner, Webb Simpson quickly fell out of contention, finishing the tournament ten over. And the man famous, or infamous, for his near US Open wins, Phil Mickelson didn't have to worry about a seventh time of finishing second. He tumbled off the pace in round two and never regained form, but at least he could laugh about it. He joked with reporters Saturday saying, if I play well, if I hit it better and make some putts I think I can shoot four or five under, end around even, finish second again.

There was also some excitement for NBC's Roger Maltbie too, as the driver of his golf cart got arrested. The driver reportedly either hit a state trooper's leg or foot while driving, and never stopped. Quoted by Golf Week Maltbie said, this is a new one. I've been to a couple of rodeos and a county fair and I've never had this happen. As for Kaymer, well, we're pretty sure this was a special father's day for his dad Horst.
