He was a tall charming man, great fun, very exciting. >> When I knew Ian Fleming it was because he was my father's assistant in the years before the war when my father started recruiting his team. The governor of the Bank of England recommended Ian and so that's how Ian came. >> Ian was a little bit like James Bond but he always denied it. Like any good writer he wrote from experience. Skiing he loved, swimming he loved, driving he loved, and girls he loved so they all came into the books. >> He was glamorous, romantic, rather spoiled and had privileges none of us had like bowling off in his Thunderbird to the country at lunch time on Friday while we shouldered on to the small hours on Sunday morning. >> There's so much that he shares with James Bond there's so much that, you know, from the brand of cigarettes to the snobbery, to love of America and yet, there are many ways he is completely different. He saw no combat in World War II and, of course, Bond is the ultimate, ultimate action hero. >> I asked him to sign my copy in the corridor which he did for me. To Godfrey Smith, a fellow scrivener Ian Fleming, which made that book by today's money, 10, 000 pounds. I do not have it, I sold it because my daughter was getting married. >> In Bond, we still ruled the waves. In Bond, we are still a super power and everybody trailed in our wake and I think that's still possible.
