## Transcript

Let's talk about perhaps the most famous photo that you snapped of Muhammad Ali. It's him standing over Sonny Liston Lewiston, Maine May 25, 1965. Did you two ever talk about that photo, and did he ever tell you what that meant to him, because it means so much to sports fans. Well he actually signed it for me in the nicest way. He just said " Thanks for the great photo ." The one thing about Ali, however is if Howard Bingham came along half an hour later. I think at one point Mohammad told me this, " that's the greatest fight picture ever. Greatest boxing picture ." And an hour or two later he was with Howard Bingham, he told Howard Bingham.

That that's the nicest [ LAUGHING ] So I really don't know, you know, I mean he was always very, very good to me. LIsten, he, I mean Mohammad never met a camera he didn't like. I don't think he ever met a rider he didn't like. Or a television, he made heroes that defending but it didn't cover that, I'd come back with a set of pictures And my boss at Sport's Illustrated thought, wow, this guy Life is good. Well, you couldn't miss. You'd have to be asleep not to get good pictures of Ali. He gave you more time than you'd ever need. Can you describe what the atmosphere was like at an Ali fight? Well you know the early fights I was just so excited to be covering the heavyweight championship fight.

Later on I mean there were the same people there I mean he I think really He changed the sport. He changed the sport in so many ways. The phrase of fight at Madison square garden. In March 8 I think 1971 that fight was a who's who. Certainly in Black America. And not only did you have to be there but you had to be dressed in your finest. That didn't happen before. Fights were a whole bunch of cigar- smoking guys with The old time gangsters or things like that. Yeah. But Mohammed just made it into a festival. He entertained so well that the fight became I think it became a lot more palatable to women.

I assume you'd agree. No doubt. Because of the glitz, the glam, the- Well, he's also the best looking fighter out of us. [ LAUGH ] He's a very handsome guy, and And i mean and he charmed the daylights out of anybody and he certainly liked to work the crowd. Kids and women, people who never would have gravitated towards boxing Muhammad brought in i think.
