## Transcript

>> In all the hipster neighborhoods in Los Angeles and Toronto, every time you go to a new vegan restaurant there's an arrow on the ceiling that points to Brooklyn.

>> So this is one that kind of magical kingdoms of a particular breed of white persons.

>> Yes. It is the magical kingdom.

>> Self- appointed white people expert Christian Lander is the author of the hilarious book Stuff White People Like and the blog of the same name. In his second book Whiter Shades of Pale, Lander goes regional. His mockery of urban Caucasian culture targets locations like this one, the Cobble Hill neighborhood in Brooklyn held up as a bastion of white pretension. He's agreed to give me a tour of what white people like nowadays and the vegan restaurant is our first stop.

>> Safest place to take someone on a first date.

>> Why is it safe?

>> All their dietary restrictions should be covered here.

>> Okay.

>> Should be able to find dairy- free--

>> Right.

>> Meat- free, gluten- free.

>> Right.

>> All here.

>> Okay.

>> So you don't have to worry about that awkward conversation or you can save that conversation for the dinner.

>> Right.

>> And then you have something to talk about so you don't get to awkward silence--

>> And the topic being all the stuff you can't eat.

>> All the stuff you can't eat.

>> All right.

>> And are disgusted that other people are eating.

>> According to Lander, food is one of white people's main obsessions from berry picking to raw milk to sea salt. Humor and irony also hold a prominent place for white people especially when it comes to tattoos. So our next stop is Brooklyn Tattoo where we get the lowdown from apprentice tattoo artist and white person Sara Antoinette. You're gonna help her point out your own moustache tattoo. Classic handlebar--

>> Fantastic. Excellent job.

>> Or like this. I have a piece of tattoo too.

>> No way. No way. Impossible.

>> Yes.

>> Impossible.

>> Well, it's a rat with bat wings holding a slice of pizza that says New York City.

>> But why do white people like fancy food and ironic tattoos? And what's up with those Moleskine notebooks? Lander says it all comes down to creating the right persona.

>> Ultimately as a white person what you're trying to do is project an aura of creativity, to let other people know that you are creative.

>> Right.

>> But often times you don't have that much time to make that impression. Thankfully holding a Moleskine notebook automatically says to people oh, he's a creative guy. He's probably a writer or maybe he's an architect.

>> After pounding the Brooklyn pavement in search of white culture, Lander and I sat down for a couple of fair trade coffee. I got a decaf latte. I wanna hear about the whitest thing that you yourself are guilty of.

>> My worst white crime is I am an unabashed foodie. After you hit 30 all that energy and snobbery you devoted to bands, you switch to restaurants because the reason is that you'll never be the oldest guy at the restaurant. You know what I mean? Like you will never be humiliated at the restaurant. So all of my indie music snobbery I've abandoned for food snobbery.

>> Wait a minute. I'm an unabashed foodie. I'm drinking a latte. I'm wearing an American apparel shirt that says I heart black people and I write about video games for a living. I think I need to ask Lander something. I like certain things that white people do.

>> Yes.

>> What does this mean for me?

>> At the end of the day you don't have to be white to be white. You just have to be rich. That's it. So don't worry about it. It means things are going well for you. Your finances are in shape. Everything is gonna be just fine.

>> For TIME video this is Evan Narcisse.
