Thanks to this little known committee, here's what to know about the House Natural Resources Committee and why it matters for the midterms in one minute. Democrats are already planning the investigations they could launch if they take control of the House. Most of the attention is focused on powerful panels like Judiciary and Oversight, but the Natural Resources Committee could become an unexpected center of that fight because it oversees federal lands, including national parks, monuments and federally controlled parkland in Washington, D.C. that gives the committee jurisdiction on some of the most visible controversies of Trump's second term his $400 million white House ballroom, his planned 250 foot triumphal arch, and the troubled $14 million renovation of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. Representative Jared Huffman is the committee's top Democrat and the likely chairman if his party takes the house. He told me he's already got a list of investigations he plans to pursue. He wants records showing how these projects were approved, how taxpayer money was spent, who donated, and whether they had business before the government. The committee could also investigate administration policies that are alarming environmentalists, like proposed land swap involving Yosemite National Park and Trump's moves against offshore wind farms.
