[ SOUND ] The town has been under seige since March, 2010. When many began marching against President Bashar al- Assad's authoritarian rule. [ FOREIGN ] Asaad responded with violence, killing thousands. [ SOUND ] Many Syrians have sought refuge across the border in Jordan. We drove to meet with six men, who crossed the border illegally, and were being held at a detention center for illegal immigrants. Although Jordanian authorities forbid filming official facilities, the Syrian men inside were eager to tell their stories. This 33- year old high school teacher is active in the protest movement in Durah. He had recently crossed the border. I've been here in Jordan for three days, they put me in jail twice, this was the third time they were looking for me. Nadal told us, he was wanted by Syrian State Police, for demonstrating. > They went into my house, searched it, destroyed it. I wasn't sleeping in my house, because I knew they would come. Like many in the Syrian protest movement, these men are not career activists, but average citizens who took to the streets in the spring. I was a construction worker. I poured concrete. I was a farmer, I worked in agriculture. When the revolution started, work stopped for us. Many of the young men at the detention center were eager to share cellphone videos from the uprising in Durah. [ INAUDIBLE ] Some show public protests in the town's Mas, Main square. Others, like this one, show evidence of violent repression by Syrian security forces. A young revolutionary, 22 year old Hassan, was wounded in the summer when the army opened fire on a protest he attended. He says the bullet is still inside him. [ FOREIGN ] The army showed up, to prevent us from marching from town to town. And they opened fire on us. I ended up in an improvised hospital in someone's house. The men say they are treated with respect by the police at the detention center, but they live here with the bear minimum. Ten of them packed in small cells with two bunk beds. When there is running water, it's ice cold. And the smell in the bathrooms is suffercating. [ FOREIGN ] Yesterday someone was sick. And we asked the cops outside for medical attention. No one showed up. It's not that they don't respect us. It's just that we depend on people's charity on individual help. [ FOREIGN ] Last fall the Arab League were able to send observers to Syria. With the intention of negotiating a ceasefire between government forces and protestors. This week, the observers suspended their mission, citing the intensifying violence. [ FOREIGN ] All these meetings, the decisions, the waiting. [ FOREIGN ] If you look at the signs during our demonstrations. They're all answers to this. They're addressed to the Arab League and others. [ FOREIGN ] These delays are paid for in people's blood. [ FOREIGN ] Every day 30, 40 people are dying because of these delays. [ FOREIGN ] These men believe their movement has the support of a majority of Syrians, but they simply do not have the military and logistical resources to defeat the regime. [ FOREIGN ] The free army doesn't have a lot of weapons. Even their numbers are low. But if we have air support and a safe haven, the free Syrian army will grow. It's capabilities will grow. You have a lot of soldiers who would love to defect, but they are afraid for the safety for their kids and parents. [ FOREIGN ] At this point, Jordanian police enter the room and demand that we stop filming and leave the premises. [ FOREIGN ] [ FOREIGN ] As the violence continues inside Syria, it's likely more Syrians will enter Jordan illegally in the coming months. According to the UN Refugee Agency, Jordanian authorities have secured land for a camp along the Syrian border to house the influx of refugees in the coming months. But it has yet to be built. Meanwhile, Nadal and his fellow refugees wait in limbo, confident that their cause will prevail. I think the fall of the regime is a certainty at this point. [ INAUDIBLE ] So we're hoping to be able to come back soon. The regime, it's like a drowning man in his last moments. It's moving frantically, just before it drowns.
