## Transcript

>> Of all the things for which women have an inexplicable affection, and Matthew McConaughey comes to mind, high- heeled shoes are among the most puzzling. This season women are heading off to world in footgear more vertiginous than ever, topping out at about 6 inches.

>> Barely fours step was with the shoes.

>> In September's spring fashion shows, tree- high shoes felled several models on the Milan runways creating a YouTube sensation.

>> Tethering in high, balanced on giant platforms. They caused at least two dolls to trip, and the rest managed to hobble and wobble their way around the wooden bleachers where the audience was perched.

>> The advertising for Saks Fifth Avenue in New York City boasts that shoes have their own zip code, 10022 SHOE, and this neighborhood is heavily populated with the highest of heels.

>> Is it right to say that it's a big season for high heels?

>> This is definitely a big season for high heels and that is because it ties back to the ready to wear which is really skirts and dresses here.

>> Suzanne Johnson is general manager of Saks' flagship store.

>> So, this is the Yves Saint Laurent and it definitely is one of the highest heels that we carry.

>> This is six inches. There's a platform of about 2 inches so it's really honey 4 inches, what's that?

>> So it's a trick. This is Christian Louboutin and this probably the most desired shoe right now and the trademarks of Louboutin is the red bottom. A lot of women now-- and again you can see that he is really doing a lot heel embellishment.

>> Can we see the height of that one?

>> Yes.

>> Okay. So well, what is this? Like this is a 5- inch heel, that's the highest. Is the wedge easier than the stiletto to walk in?

>> Yes a little bit.

>> This is more of the best?

>> You can go a little bit faster.

>> A little bit faster. So I'm thinking you were hoping to see--

>> But I still suggest walk slow.

>> This is a Jimmy Choo right?

>> Yes it is.

>> How high do you think heels can go?

>> They can go as high as 6 inches.

>> Six inches.

>> Yes. Yes.

>> Do they come with instructions like on how to walk?

>> You know, I suggest that you walk slowly, but you'll get noticed more so that's important.

>> Behind the appeal of getting noticed lies a deep truth, and that is the Jimmy Choo's, Manolo Blahnik's and Christian Louboutin's are not primarily apparel. The protection of feet is not their first priority.

>> This is actually very much like a stiletto which is actually the Italian word for dagger. The stiletto is actually a tool. It projects an image that is both feminine and powerful. But any tool or weapon works better with training.

>> There are many common mistakes made when wearing heels, such as wobbly ankles.

>> That's why there are classes to learn how to walk in them and even instructional videos.

>> It doesn't matter how cute your shoes are, if you don't know how to work it, forget about it.

>> Walk right in these shoes and you'll look like a million bucks, even if your stock portfolio dwindles to nothing.

>> Is there any truth to the rumor when the market goes down, the heels go up.

>> You know, they say that, but it does make women feel more powerful and confident and besides feeling sexy and feminine at the same time.

>> I read a study that came out in Italy last year that said that women who wear stilettos have better sex life, would you care to comment?

>> I thought you might say that. This is Belinda Luscombe for TIME. com, New York.
