But not all US Coast wire ships are thus equipped. Within a short five months from one New York harbor pier, number 13, and from one US Coast wire shipping line, three times the [ unk ] Pleasure Liner has steamed out to sea and to catastrophe. First the Morro Castle, another Ward Liner, The Havana goes aground on the Gulf Stream. But when the victims of a third Ward Line disaster are carried to port, the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Senator Pittman speaks out. >> For six long years, a stubborn monarchy in the Senate of the United States has brought every attempt to ratify the international safety code. This code has been adopted by every important maritime nation except the United States. Of its many provisions, consider one, this all important steering law. In the order continue the word starboard, shall mean that the wheel, the rudder blade, and the head of the ship shall all move to the right. Before the drafting of the safety code, the order Starboard your helm meant that the wheel was to be turned to the right and the ship to the left. Not all American ships have abandoned this old practice.
