## Transcript

>> These undocumented migrants in the port town of Calais are being extra careful and thorough as they bathe today. They're afraid their scent will be caught by the dogs that patrol the border here. Tonight, they plan to hitch a ride under one of the thousands of freight trucks that pass through this port daily bound for the U. K.

>> This border is very dangerous. Every night, I try to-- there's no chance, no chance. Once I tried. No chance. Nasir Khan Ansari is among the hundreds of Afghan refugees stuck in Calais yet determined to make it across to the U. K. somehow.

>> Some of them were reluctant to apply for asylum in France because they did not want to stay in France, but normally people want to go to a place where they know somebody.

>> Calais has become a cul- de- sac on the numerous illegal migrant routes that lead to the U. K. from places like Iraq, Afghanistan, and the horn of Africa. Improved border control of this port in recent years created a dead end for migrants. and more and more of them got stuck here. Dubbed the jungle, this was the largest migrant camp of its kind in Europe, then France decided to flatten it in late September. Critics say the action did nothing to solve the problem.

>> They're not coming here for the jungle. They're coming because right opposite us is England. Now, the government is going to have exactly what it didn't want, many jungles everywhere in Calais.

>> Those 18 and older are in hiding, sleeping in empty apartments and warehouses, avoiding Calais and its heavily policed streets. But underage migrants are immune from deportation and are less wary. It has turned downtown Calais into a kind of nightmarish Neverland with underaged Afghan migrants, some as young as 12, taking refuge under its bridges and in its parks.

>> Where do you live, man?

>> Here.

>> Where did you sleep?

>> Here, here, here. This place. -[ Foreign Language ]

>> Most of these children are brought to France by a relay of human smugglers that stretches back to Afghanistan.

>> From Afghanistan, Iran, by mountain and cars, slurries. In the airport, many people, no food, nothing. From Iran, then turkey. After Turkey, Iran. And from Iran, Italy, Italy. After Italy, France.

>> The entire journey costs between 10, 000 and 15, 000 dollars, released in stages when the child arrives at a given destination and calls home. But now children arriving in Calais are more vulnerable than ever.

>> This is something that needs to be addressed urgently regardless the status of this kid, whether they are migrants or refugees. It really doesn't matter. They are kids and they need special protection and special treatment.

>> Nassir says he fled Taliban persecution in Afghanistan. He spent seven fruitless months trying to cross from Calais to the U. K. Now he has given up and will apply for asylum in France.

>> I don't like U. K. I don't like France. I don't like any country. I like my country. I like my country in Afghanistan. I like my life. I like my family. But in my country, big problem. I go back to my country, kill me. For now in Calais, the Indian summer is ending and these children brace themselves for a harsh European winter outdoors. Don Duncan for time. com in Calais, France.
