## Transcript

Hi, I'm Doug Aamoth, Time. com Technology Editor, and let's talk Kindles. In the beginning there was a Kindle. One model, easy choice. Then came the second generation Kindle. Better looking but still just one model. Life was simpler back then, right? Then came the Kindle DX, was a lot bigger and more expensive than the regular Kindles, so two models but still a pretty easy choice. Then came the third generation. Kindle's Wifi, Wifi plus 3G, and, again, the huge Kindle DX. Life suddenly got slightly more complicated, but the basic options were cheap at Wifi only, more expensive but able to download books from just about anywhere, and the big expensive Kindle DX.

And now this. Amazon officially has seven Kindle models available for purchase. From left to right we've got the Kindle, just called the Kindle. The Kindle Touch, the Kindle Keyboard, the Kindle Keyboard 3G, the Kindle Touch 3G, the Kindle Fire and yep, the big Kindle DX. Which one's right for you? If price is the most important factor, the Kindle, Kindle Touch and Kindle Keyboard are all good options that start at less than a $ 100. The Kindle's the most basic, the Kindle Touch has a touch screen, the Kindle Keyboard has, you guessed it a keyboard. All three use WIFI, so you'll need to be connected to a WIFI network to download books.

Now the Kindle keyboard 3G and the Kindle Touch 3G both have WIFI chips, but they also have built in 3G chips, meaning that whenever you can get an AT & T signal you can download books. This includes international traveling as well and carries no monthly fee. Amazon picks up the tab since you're buying Amazon books. The Kindle DX sports the same features, but it's got a big 9. 7 inch screen, all the others have six inch screens except for the Fire. And it costs $ 379. If all you wanna do is read electronic books, any of the sub $ 150 options will work fine. It's just a question of whether you want a touchscreen, a keyboard, and or an international cellular connection.

Now if you wanna portable device for reading books, but you also wanna play games, watch movies, listen to music, and surf the web, the new Kindle Fire is priced very aggressively at $ 200. It's got a 7 inch color touch screen, it's based on the Android operating system, which means you can download apps. It's a tablet. Compared to all the other models, its battery lasts hours, not days or weeks or months. And it's more expensive, it also doesn't have a 3G chip at all. But man, does it do a lot of cool stuff, and at $ 200, it's almost an impulse buy as far as tablets go. The standard Kindle, Kindle Keyboard, Keyboard 3G and DX are all available now.

The Kindle Fire will be available on November 15th, and the Kindle Touch and Touch 3G will be available November 21st.
