Since the government ended a gambling monopoly in 2002, nearly 20 casinos had shattered to the skyline. Already gambling revenues have surpassed Las Vegas, but not everyone is benefitting from the boom. -[ Foreign Language ] The people making the money are the casino owners and real estate developers but the problems is, our income gap is getting bigger. >> Casino make more and more Macau people very poor. >> In December a thousand people rallied to demand democracy, higher paid to keep up with rising prices and better job opportunities for local workers in the Chinese territories. -[ Foreign Language ] Large construction and entertainment projects mostly use foreign labor, smaller projects. If they don't use foreign labor, they use illegal labor. So it turns out that local workers can't find work. >> But white- collar workers are making more money than their parents ever dreamed of. Lured by the chance to make up to $ 3, 000 a month, many of Macau's young people are skipping out on college and becoming dealers. >> At the government- run casino career center, students train around the clock to do everything from casino security to slot machine maintenance to dealing cards. Along with salaries in the gambling sector, real estate prices are also soaring in the 11- square mile city. Prices for secondary homes have doubled in just 4 years. For some people, the opportunities to gamble create a more personal challenge since Poon Yan- chi, director of a church run Gambling Addiction Clinic. -[ Foreign Language ] Because the number of casinos in Macau keeps growing of course, the number of gambling addicts will also rise. There are casinos everywhere. So, in order to kick the gambling addiction, people must have a support group with them all the time. >> There is so much attention on gambling, most tourist tend to overlook the city's other faces, a mixture of Chinese and Portuguese culture easily seen and heard in the city's architecture, food and languages. >> Last year 27 million tourists poured into Macau. With that number rising, many are worried this city's basic infrastructure might burst at the seams. Thousands of hotel rooms are being built. The taxis are hard to find and ferries from nearby Hong Kong are already packed. In a recent survey, 50 percent of people said they weren't satisfied with the direction the city is heading.
