Jabari Parker is barely 17 years old. Still pasting together posterboard for a presentation on Carnevale. But Parker is also the nation's top high school basketball player. [ SOUND ] A six eight phenom who's been getting college scholarship offers Since 7th grade, and now as a High School Junior, is attracting attention that spills into almost every corner of his life. I'm here, to present the Gatorade High School basketball player of the year award. To Jabari. Well, thank you. [ NOISE ] I get the impression, it's not your favorite part of this whole thing. All the attention. huh. Yeah. It sucks It sucks [ LAUGH ] What sucks about it?

Because it's so, it's so much expected for someone to be so, you know, popular. And if they mess up, it's like the biggest thing in the world. So if you were worried, you say, the less chance you have of messing up. Yeah. [ LAUGH ] That's probably why I'm so, to myself a lot. But when Jabari shares his story, it's irresistible. He starts his day before dawn with an hour of bible study. Dear father in heaven we're so grateful for this day. The surprising Mormon faith passed from his mother who was born in the South Pacific nation of Tonga. Then move to Salt Lake City. When the sun comes up, Jabari heads to Simeon Career Academy, where he maintains a 3.

6 GPA. Jabari's a wonderful student. He's also very humble. He puts others first. As shy as he can be, Parker also seems to be on a mission. To change stereotypes of what it means to be a jock from Chicago's south side. Right from the bat, they look at a black person as being fatherless, being a thug, teenage boy that's so good at basketball. And I'm from this neighborhood, and I have a good family, and I want to get rid of that you know that cliche. Parker's father is no ordinary dad. So, what high schools ya'll gonna go to? Former NBA player Sonny Parker runs a non- profit basketball program that gave Jabari a chance to play top competition from a young age.

Jabari's high school coach Rob Smith says he believed Parker was destined for the NBA. All the way back in elementary school. The first time I ever saw him play was in, fifth grade. I mean, it was a treat to watch a ten year old be so skilled. I mean, just his, his knack and his basketball IQ, and fundamentals. And more athletic than most ten year olds? No, he was not athletic at all at that point, you know? He was a little chubby kid at, at ten years old. But very quickly the pieces came together for Parker who since freshman year has been considered the top recruit in the class of 2013. This March, he won his third straight state championship.

That's it Simeon wins 50 to 48. Kings of basketball in the state of Illinois! You can't be a star at Simeon without being compared to their most famous alum. Derrick Rose went on become the youngest NBA MVP ever, but says Parker is on an even faster track. He's far, man, he's far above me, man. Well He's more advanced than you are? For sure he's polished. [ SOUND ] Very polished, but I wasn't that polished when I was in high school. In five years, Jabari Parker will be? Probably one of the top- five basketball players in the NBA. But remember, Jabari Parker, is still just an 11th grader, a can't miss kid with impossible expectations.

How does that pressure feel? It doesn't feel good. It makes me feel uneasy. Yeah. They probably think I'm so mature for my age, but I'm also a kid at the same time, I'm only 17 years old. I know this shit, playing in the playoff, he couldn't really go a hotdog or something to eat or something to drink. He went to parking lot, stayed out there with his coach, he couldn't come back in. But the ultimate request for Jabari's time, comes from the dozens of colleges asking that he move to their campus. Nearly 200 letters arrive every week. [ NOISE ] Jabari says he's looking for a school that will maximize his potential and give him a good chance at a national title, but pinning him down on where he'll go is just about impossible.

It's gotta be Kentucky or Duke, right? huh, [ LAUGH ] yeah, but you know, other schools, too. Lyle Candace, and you never know about these minute majors, because they surprise everybody all the time. So you're leaving the door open to anybody. Anybody at this point. Yeah. Wherever he goes, he's not likely to stay long. Jubari says he'll leave for the NBA, once he's projected as a top five pick. And that could be after just one year in college. For his senior year of high school, his schedule includes a public speaking class. His days of keeping to himself are coming to an end. I asked coach to finish this same sentence, " In five years, Jabarri Parker will be ." In the NBA.

He said he'll be one of the top five players in the NBA. I wouldn't look at that because you still have, you know? DeWayn Wade, Lebron James still in the, the league right now. Do you model yourself after any of them? I model myself after Bryan Calvary probably one of the unknown people in the NBA. Because they're just grateful to be there in that situation. And they can't look at theirself as I'm a superstar. They're still humble, they're still open. And I wanna be like that. So you wanna stay humble. Mm- hm. It's hard to be humble when you're one of the top five players in the NBA. Yeah, it is.

That's gonna be a trick. It is. It's gonna be a trick.
