And we'll have the interviews. We're just talking to the troops who received us here in Narino, Colombia, right on the borderline with Ecuador. For more than 50 years, Colombia has been painfully associated with cocaine and cartels. Coca is a raw ingredient used to make cocaine, and more of it is grown here than ever before. Despite the US backed war on drugs, global consumption also grows year after year. Such demand makes coca an irresistibly lucrative crop in a region where there are few other opportunities. En estas comunidades siempre hay violencia Ambivalent. The Colombian government has failed to offer viable alternatives, and now the US is threatening to cut off military aid and police cooperation if the trafficking continues. But one of the armed groups who patrol and profit from the system may, ironically, be key to leading a way out of it. Usted es un narcotraficantes esto. Esto es verdad. No. Es totalmente falso. We are in Putumayo, southern Colombia, in a place called Valle del Gomez. This is the territory of Los Comandos de la Frontera. And as soon as we left the main road, we saw cocoa plantations popping up on the left hand side and the right hand side. And we're about 30 minutes from meeting them in a village here. Government officials believe there are 1200 armed members of the Comandos de la Frontera in Colombia. They control most of the border areas with Ecuador and Peru, which are central to key trafficking routes. It's the first time to be out in the field that open with a non-state armed group and going through the territory. I think we're about with maybe 20, 25 members of the Comando de la Frontera. Many of them come from indigenous communities. We know most of them come from Putumayo. Just making small chat with a few of them. We understand that the reason that they joined the Comando de la Frontera definitely is money. They are one of the few non-state armed groups in Colombia that actually pay an income. This is why they call themselves, for example, a rebel group of the 21st century. Knowing that the former FARC, for example, never paid wages. These guys also get a weekend off, they get holidays and even Social Security. For nearly half a century, this area was controlled by the FARC as the rebel group waged war with the government. After the 2016 peace agreement, the power vacuum formed, which led to a need, or at least an opportunity for the commandos to step in. I met with two top commanders. One who goes by the alias Jackal and the other is Commander Marine, the group's lead peace negotiator with the government. Commando. Numero uno. Dos tres cuatro Cinco seis siete. Buenas tardes. What we see here in this territory is that there's coca everywhere. Every 2 or 3 months, the coca growers can pick leaves again. So there is a few harvests a year. Campesinos, some campesinos y en su mayoria cultivation coca cultivos de coca. Porque eso es la economia. Qué hay aqui no hay otra economia el campesino pueda sobrevivir. The commandos formed in order to protect themselves. Many former party members were being hunted down and killed. They promised to bring order and security to coca growing communities were being robbed by rival gangs. Qué nos territorios al salir la mayoria? Entonces eso estaba volviendo Como un caos para uno. Ya llevaba en la gente pero ya ya ya. Ya comenzaron Los otros comenzaron. Las violaciones comenzaron Los hechos. En Los companeros. Campesinos! Gracias a comando de fronteras. Tenemos esto lamentablemente no somos poder porque el poder de estar en Bogota. Pero entonces las comunidades mas de nosotros en el mismo estado. En Bogota. I sat down with Armando Novoa, who leads the Colombian government delegation in peace talks with the Comandos de la Frontera. Qué hace diferentes de un narcotraficante, Gaston? Mas en las comunidades ahi. ESO les de poder para suplir las necesidades de las comunidades esté bien pero lo hacen a su manera de manera dictatorial authoritarian no tienen principios democraticos. In June of 2022, Two, Colombia elected its first left wing leader, Gustavo Petro. The history making candidate promised total peace for Colombia. Now, with less than a year left in his presidency, Petro is trying to protect both his legacy while under pressure by the Trump administration. The US is threatening to decertify Colombia as a partner in the war on drugs, which would lead to big cuts in aid. The last time the US government did certified Columbia was in 1996 as the government pushed to regain Washington's support. It set the stage for campaigns rife with human rights abuses and military intervention that displaced thousands of farmers. In population affected politics. The land that is so fertile for growing coca could easily be used to grow alternative crops like cacao and coffee. But the problem is not the land, rather the lack of investment in infrastructure like roads and rural development is easier to move than bulky food crops. The commandos took us to a lab where we see how little is needed to convert the crop into coca paste, which is later turned into powder, and then transported on dirt roads, rivers and across borders. Nosotros dejar de ser un lider. In a rare turn, the commandos de la Frontera in Putumayo are now among the few armed groups willing to discuss coca crop substitution. Nosotros queremos la transformacion de Los territorios. ESO quiere decir nosotros queremos qué esto se acaba por qué es esto. Es la violencia. Nosotros sabemos de esto la violencia. Esto es el combustible. Esto es el combustible para la organizaciones armadas in Los territorios en esto. Farmers are skeptical, but also ready for change. No es bueno por qué. Porque con ese motivo es nosotros miramos un futuro Como para nuestra familia. Hoy en dia. No queremos decirle de pronto el Gobierno. Sino esto se tiene qué ver complemento con una politica de transformacion territorial para si exitoso. Un cinco anos. Donde se van a ustedes quieren estar en cinco anos? Si un proceso de Paz y el gobierno del Estado. Yo me miro en en una reaccion de esta con una vaquita proyecto legal con la familia y tranquilo si el gobierno. De nadie nos VA a venir, a monster y el producto no VA a comenzar a cultivar. Tenga salida. La compra y con eso nos tenga. But time is running out for the Petro administration, and candidates in the 2026 elections are already campaigning on the idea of military intervention instead of total peace. Nosotros estamos buscando acelerar resultados porque nuestro periodo de Gobierno esta por terminar y uno de Los legados del presidente. Petro VA a ser la Constitucion de cultivos. Sabe qué es lo mas miedo me da. Yo creo qué es mas facil. Llegar con ellos a un acuerdo con el estado les cumpla. Es un gobierno.
