## Transcript

>> Suddenly is an exactly the word to describe the recent competition between T Mobile and AT & T, competition for both customers and attention. Less than a week after AT & T offered customers $ 450 to switch over from T Mobile, T Mobile shot back a bigger offer.

>> They are offering to pay early cancellation fees for those willing to switch from other carriers including AT & T and Verizon. Customers can receive up to $ 650 in credit after trading in a phone--

>> CEO, John Legere, announced the daring offer Wednesday at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

>> And we believe very strongly that the world should be without contracts. We're not gonna attack somebody. I make it very clear. We're going after everybody's customers.

>> Can T Mobile actually pull off a market share shift? Forbes points out the number one and two mobile carriers, Verizon and AT & T have two- third of the US Market. So a significant shift isn't likely soon. Still the New York Times rights of the number four ranked carrier, it has the other carriers in somewhat of a defensive crouch. Also, clearly, AT & T views T Mobile as a threat. Now this is just the latest back and forth between T Mobile and AT & T since a failed merger in 2011. The animosity is almost become its own side story. The companies have traded attack ads. Legere even called AT & T's $ 450- plan desperate and then wrote on Twitter, " I guess we are making AT & T a bit nervous ." But perhaps our favorite tip came earlier in the week when a CNET Executive editor posted a picture to Twitter of Legere crashing an AT & T party at CES.

The company quickly had the competition booted from the room. The question remains, will the little guys' bald move lose the company a lot of money or change the entire industry? For TIME, I'm Megan Murphy.
