## Transcript

[ MUSIC ] With the new year fast approaching, it's a good time to take a quick check on your finances. We've got Jill Schlesinger here, money expert, to talk about some quick check- ins you can do during down time. Thank you. Great to be here. So let's talk a little bit about some of the financial apps. I know some people have new phones for the holidays, what are some things that they can put on their phones to help them get things on track? Absolutely. I think there are some old standards like Mint or You Need a Budget, but there's some extra Features that two programs that I like a lot. One is Acorns the other is Level Money.

They kind of help you find the dollars that are floating around, capture them, and either save or invest them. So, any of those four would be a great advantage to you as you start that new year. Okay, let's talk about that money, that saving or investing money. Anything quick you can do to, See if it's doing the right things for you. I know the Fed is starting to raise rates, I know they're gonna raise rates next year, interest rates are still really low. So it would behoove you to really do a little quick search on how to improve the interest you are receiving on your Your savings, your checking, your money market, or your CDs.

One place is DepositAccounts. com. You can compare all those places. You can also check out a credit union. They often have better rates than banks. Okay, and what about retirement accounts? Anything fast there? Yeah, let me tell you what's fast. Stop making yourself crazy. Do auto- rebalancing, Keep that allocation in check so your emotions don't lead you astray. This will just force you to make sure that you keep whatever allocation you determine ahead of time. Talk about security things, anything quick to take care of your money there. About half of us actually don't take advantage of something that's so great, a free credit report at AnnualCreditReport.

com. So go ahead, log- on, get the credit report, correct any errors that you might see, because those errors could actually end up costing you money if you go get a car loan or a mortgage. Okay, and insurance, anything you can do there that's fast? Well, I think it's really been a lot easier to actually check up on your property insurance. It's a tough one. Property casualty, your home and your car, now you can literally plug in some numbers and make sure that you have the right amount of insurance. You don't want to do this after an event occurs, not to the next form. Do it right now. Compare apples to apples Be sure that you are not underinsured, that is something that can really bite you in the you know where.

[ LAUGH ] And anything else, just getting yourself prepared for next year. Get out a file, write on that file 2015 taxes. In that file the first thing you're going to do is put last years tax returns in there. Then as all your documents come in here in the next few months, you've got your folder, you're ready to rock and roll, no crying about your taxes, we all have to do it. Jill [ UNKNOWN ] thank you so much for being here. It was great, thank you. [ MUSIC ]
