## Transcript

>> Hello, New York.

>> Today, I'm getting career tips from a man who has every seven- year- old girl's dream job. Christopher Lawrence designs Miley Cyrus' clothes.

>> a superstar.

>> I'm Rebecca Keegan and I used to be the Hollywood correspondent for Time Magazine. Sweet gig, right? Well, when the economy nose- dogged, I became a full- time freelances and now I'm pounding the pavement, working my movie industry contacts to try and get a job in Hollywood. This is the first feature film about Miley Cyrus' popular Disney Channel character, Hannah Montana. Hannah's the pop star alter ego of an unassuming teenage girl named Miley Stuart who keeps her glamorous second life a secret from her friends. It takes one blonde wig and a lot of wardrobe changes to maintain the mystery.

>> You be Hannah. You be Hannah.

>> Move your hand.

>> I can't be Hannah.

>> I'm--

>> You be Hannah.

>> Miley.

>> You be Hannah.

>> Stop it. [ unk ].

>> The man responsible for all those wardrobe changes is Christopher Lawrence.

>> The basic job of a costume designer is really to tell a story of who the character is by a visual image.

>> Uh huh.

>> Nowadays, most costume designers create a character's wardrobe by hitting them all. But Lawrence kicked it old school, actually designing Miley's clothes from scratch.

>> This outfit was the last outfit actually that I had to design for Miley. I thought, " Oh my gosh. You know what-- What else can I do ?"

>> Uh huh.

>> You know, it's like writers get writers' block. I was really like, " I have nothing left ." And I saw this and there was something about this that appealed to me. It's just toweling so then I was using this airbrush person. So I had him airbrush stripes on to it, and then I found this fabric which I thought was interesting. So now I've got this and this. It's not-- It's not enough for me.

>> It's kind of missing that Hannah sparkle.

>> Yeah.

>> Yeah.

>> Exactly. Exactly. Months before that I have sat on this necklace and I really love this necklace. It's very cute.

>> Uh huh.

>> It's big. It's a little chunky. I wasn't sure it was right for this. But what I thought I would do is then soaks screen this on to a t- shirt. So that's where this came. And then the great thing about working with Miley is I would draw these clothes and I thought, " Oh that's cute ." And then Miley would come to set dressed in it and I would just be knocked out.

>> This is a long way from where this designer started, working for Spree in the eighties.

>> This job you will work an average seventy hours a week probably.

>> Wow.

>> It's a-- It's really time intensive.

>> So my visions of like taking a long lunch at the mall while you just kind of get some [ unk ] down--

>> No.

>> that's not really--

>> When I drive up to the-- my favorite fast food restaurant,

>> Uh huh.

>> they know who I am by my order.

>> Oh, what's your favorite fast food restaurant?

>> Del Taco.

>> Next, we head out to do some shopping for research purposes, of course. We're at the House Of Petro Zillia in West Hollywood.

>> Actually, walking in I've already seen a couple of Miley outfits and certainly lots of Hannah outfits. Do you think you can find them?

>> I think I can. I think I can. Oh, [ unk ] a lot for me. Right? Am I wrong?

>> In my world, at this point I'd probably knock it to the Del Taco.

>> Right.

>> And maybe be like for the fitting.

>> You mean, you don't take this long to do this?

>> No way. I would run through here and maybe pull eight or ten outfits in fifteen or twenty minutes.

>> Fifteen or twenty minutes?

>> Yeah.

>> That doesn't leave much time for buying this for yourself.

>> Thank you. So maybe you can put the things that you're finding here.

>> All right.

>> This is-- This is Miley on her date. This is her painting the chicken coup.

>> Yeah. What I immediately saw was this great dress.

>> Oooh.

>> You know, that would be a lot of fun to do a concert in.

>> Yeah.

>> This little silver jacket. It would really pop the color.

>> Uh huh.

>> Little orange and the silver with her wig and her makeup and stuff--

>> Oooh.

>> in that.

>> Look how fast you did that.

>> You just put it together.

>> What are the things you'd recommend someone to I think would like to pursue a career as a costume designer?

>> Like love movies, you know. Watch movies.

>> Yes.

>> Love and look in fashion. You know, I mean, I-- seem-- That probably seems like a no- brainer but it's not just looking at the latest vogue but it's looking at fashion of the forties, fashion of the eighteen hundreds. Always continuing to learn because even now there's new technologies for sketching, for fabrics.

>> After sketching and shopping, I felt like I was well on my way to career in costume design. There was only one thing left that I needed to do.

>> What can I get for you today?

>> I'd like the Christopher Lawrence special please.

>> It's the-- He'd get a classic chicken burrito and he'd get like extra chicken and extra [ unk ] for tacos and a coke, right?

>> Thank you so much. The Hannah Montana movie opens April 10th.
