Ladies on the other hand have been consistent champs through multiple eras. Billie Jean King and Chris Evert dominated in the 70s followed by Martina Navratilova in the 80s. Meanwhile both Serena and Venus Williams have held court as a reigning champs for the past two decades. Serena has 11 titles at the US Open, eight in the singles competition alone. This year Serena's challenge goes beyond her opponents on the court She gave birth to her first child last year, which led to a series of health complications that kept her from tennis for nearly a full season. Her absence may have knocked her down to 26th in the world rankings, but every tennis fan knows she's still the one to beat. The group includes Switzerland's Roger Federer, Sweden's Rafael Nadal, Serbia's Novak Djokovic and UK's Andy Murray. But as those players enter the twilight of their careers, a new batch of American players hope to take up the mantle. While top ranking US players like John Isner, Jack Sock, and Steve Johnson were knocked out during earlier rounds of this year's open, younger up and coming players continue to wait in the wings Frances Tiafoe who ranked 44th in the world is only 20 years old and has been on meteoric rise since turning pro in 2015. While 74th ranked Taylor Fritz was the second fastest American to reach the ATP final. Their time won't come this year but hopes are high for the future.
