## Transcript

Chateau Marmutt. I think you have the wrong number. You're looking for the hotel? Buh- bye. That happens a lot. I actually run into people at dinner or, you know, friends of friends that work at Chateau Marmont and we tell funny jokes. This is Chateau Marmutt. I- it's been open for 10 years and this is our shop. So this is where we sell all the special items: collars, leashes, beds. You know, parts of my business are suffering because of the economy. The retail business is slow. You know, people aren't going to pick up an extra collar. They used to maybe, change their collars every three months.

Now, you know, doesn't really matter what collar your dog is wearing if you can't pay your gas bills. We also do grooming. You know, because of the economy it's a little slower. Because of the economy, the day care is a little slower. But

>> because we're service business, and if people are working, they still need us. You can't lock your dog up for 12 hours. Grooming? People are waiting maybe a week or two weeks extra to bathe their dog but dogs still need to get haircuts. They may wait a little longer just like we wait a little longer. You could see a little root here but you know, they still have to get it done.

>> Bernie!

>> People will do anything for their animals. But I think people are less likely to cut back on their pets. They feel like their pets are a part of their family. You know, you're not gonna cut back there. You want them to enjoy life and this is the place that they come to do that. Relative to what else is going on, we feel very lucky. We're very busy on a day- to- day basis. And if we- wherever you have three or more dogs, any dog lover knows you've got plenty to do. Americans have responded in a recent Time Magazine poll, said they were cutting back on shopping from dog collars to automobiles.

They're buying more food in bulk, shopping at discount stores more often and nearly half are spending less money on clothes. 37 percent said they're clipping coupons more. For more poll results and other stories about Americans affected by the economy, go to time. com / spending.
