## Transcript

[ MUSIC ] Never before in human history has it been as easy to get from A to B as it is today. I can leave this studio, hop in a plane and be across the country in less that six hours. That's crazy. But things could be even better. From planes to trains to automobiles we're just on the verge of a resolution in how we get around. Here's what's coming around the corner. [ MUSIC ] First up, air travel. Pretty soon you'll start to notice your in- flight Wi- Fi is getting faster. But there's even cooler stuff on the horizon. Aerospace engineers are working on more efficient designs and alternative fuel engines The promise to make flying greener than ever before.

New GPS based landing approaches will shave minutes off flights. And it's not totally nuts to think that fully autonomous jets are somewhere in our future, given how much flying autopilot systems already do today. One company, China's [ UNKNOWN ], just showed off a car sized drone that flies a single passenger without needing a pilot on board. There's been a train renaissance in the United States too, as more people realize it's way easier than flying. Traveling by train typically means avoiding long security lines and getting dropped off right in the center of a city, rather than at a far flung airport.

There are some drawbacks too. 30 % of Amtrak trips arrived behind schedule last year, for instance and trains can be slow as our country is seriously falling behind in the high speed rail department. But one idea could change all of that, the Hyperloop. Basically it's a monorail on steroids where passengers would get stuffed into a metal tube that's blasted along on air cushions at speeds somewhere around Mach 1. It sounds like a crazy idea straight out of science fiction but at least two start ups have set off to build working models by the end of decade. If the idea actually works it could solve our countries train headaches forever.

Now let's talk about cars, in fifty years we're gonna look back on human driven cars and think we were totally nuts for ever doing that, self driven cars are the future and they'll be here sooner than you think, in a lot of ways they're already here. Cars on the road today can park themselves, stay in a highway lane and even follow traffic ahead at a safe distances. The convenience factor here is obvious, going hands- free in bumper to bumper commuter traffic will free us up to be productive, or watch tv while our cars get us home, but self- driving cars could rock the automobile industry to its very core.

Who needs to own a car when there's a fleet of self- driving vehicles ready to pick us up at the tap of an app, like Uber? and what will self driving cars do for urban design when we no longer need massive parking lots for our vehicles. And how will they be insured? Lots of questions remain, but the self driving future is inevitably just around the corner. All told, it's a pretty exciting time to be a transportation geek. Lots of changes are on the horizon promising to alter Almost everything about travel. Personally, I'm most excited about driverless cars. They stand to upend the entire automotive industry and so much more with their groundbreaking potential.
