## Transcript

Yes. So it seems like suddenly everybody is fighting about Uber, which is one of the most valuable venture backed startups in the world. So what is Uber and why is everybody so angry about it? About it? Here's what's going on. Uber is a smartphone app that lets you call a car to wherever you currently are. You drop a little pin where you're standing, a car comes, gets you. Meaning you don't even really have to interact with the driver at all. Which, if you avoid human contact as much as I do, makes it a really nice app to use. So Uber has become really contentious for a lot of different reasons.

On one hand when it enters a new city, it tends to get in there without any regard for local rules or regulations. And then once people really like the app, the company goes to the local city or the local municipality and says, okay, we've got a bunch of. To people using this. Now let's figure out new rules to make it okay and make it legal and make it nice. Uber also tends to upset a lot of local incumbents, local cab industries when it comes to a new town. In New York, for instance, Mayor de Blasio's office Suggested they might put a cap on the number of Uber cars in the city, suggesting it would help reduce congestion.

Uber fought back on this really hard with radio ads, TV ads. And finally city hall back tracked and said all right, we're gonna conduct some studies and see how much congestion, if any, Uber is actually adding. And then they're gonna go from there. Uber has become a really big talking point in the 2016 presidential elections as well It's a really interesting issue because on one hand it's a progressive company, it's sort of this 21st century economic model, but on the other hand there's a lot of labor questions at hand too. Uber doesn't call their drivers employees, they call them independent contractors.

Uber doesn't have to pay for health insurance, car insurance, gas etc. for drivers. Now what Uber says is it's just connecting supply and demand. The supply of drivers who want to provide rides and get money doing so with the demand of people who want those rides. But on the other hand, as more people turn to these on- demand companies for employment, how do we make sure they have health insurance and the protections they deserve as Just workers and human beings. So is Uber actually evil? I don't think so. The huge number of people who are using it suggest that its filling a need that wasn't being filled by the incumbent taxi companies.

But on the hand, the company is specifically working on driverless car technology. They want to replace other drivers with robots. If I was an Uber driver I would be freaked out right now, because I don't want to be replaced by a robot. Maybe that's inevitable, maybe a lot of people will have their jobs replaced by robots. But whatever happens in the future, for now, we need to make sure that workers have the right protections and the right guarantees that they deserve.
