## Transcript

But with the war gone and it seems like everything is happening over and over and over again in my family, in Ukrainian families. A lot of people come up to us and say, wow, you wrote such a beautiful show. Or how could you say all these things. Or separated. Us? We didn't write it. We our job is to facilitate, to create the atmosphere where these young actors can then create their pieces. Teens. Ukraine Theatre was started with a group of teens four years ago when the war in Ukraine started, and we thought that gathering them together and beginning to tell stories, share what's on their mind.

This is a form of therapeutic theatre in a way, right? Every story in this play is real, performed by the people who lived through them. Stage with the guidance from theatre professionals. This is a form of documentary theatre, and it's proven to be helpful for some immigrant communities in New York. Sometimes one person shares and everybody relates to it. And then a story is born, right? There's a scene where they all share how many steps it took them to get to the US. I left Ukraine March 3rd, 2022, then went to Chicago and I moved to UK, to Mexico, to Egypt. And then I got here. Turns out therapists say this kind of storytelling can be healing, especially when you're dealing with something traumatic like fleeing your home.

While theater is not therapy, it can be incredibly therapeutic. The key component of all evidence based, trauma based therapies is this exposure using a narrative component. So it is literally rescripting your story, writing out that experience and going through and sort of practicing and re-exposing yourself in a gradual way, creating a space where that story, that experience can be shared and translated with others in an attempt to sort of either gain solidarity or to help another understand their experience. I think that can be immensely powerful. Producing this play is also an experiment in itself.

We don't know what the process will bring. We don't know how the show will look like. Sometimes if something, God forbid, happens today in Ukraine that we want to share, one of the actors might come tomorrow and say, can I add this to my monologue? And then it becomes it becomes a true documentary piece, right? My biggest pride is not this, this play that you're about to see. My biggest pride is the connection they create between themselves.
