## Transcript

Spring slump? What spring slump? Not only were the jobs numbers for April better than expected, but both February and March were revised upward. Hi I'm Rana Foroohar, Assistant Managing Editor of Time Magazine, and I'm here reporting on the April jobs numbers, which have come in much better than expected. 165, 000 jobs were created in April. When you dig down into the numbers, it's really interesting to see that consumers are what's driving this growth. Areas like construction and manufacturing, which we actually expected to be up, were either flat or down, but areas like retail, and even tourism and leisure were up.

That means that consumers are really digging into their pockets, and doing that spending that we had been hoping for for so long. It also reflects the fact that for the last several years, the American consumers have done the hard work of repairing their balance sheets, getting themselves into the black, credit card debt is at historic lows in this country, and so they are really once again driving the economy. You can also see that in the GDP figures that were released a few days ago. We're still in a 2 % economy, but if you strip out the drag from the public sector, the economy's actually growing in the private sector, over 3 %.

The question now is whether this can continue for the next few months, and that's gonna be dependent on wage growth. One of the great things in the April report was that there was a small uptick in wages, and that's gonna be really important going forward, because if people don't have more money to spend, we can't see a sustainable recovery, given our economy is 70 % consumer spending. But fingers crossed, if we can get through the spring and into the summer, the second half of this year should be stronger than the first.
