>> A Hong Kong construction worker unearthed a World War II bomb, Thursday that officials say is the largest unexploded bomb ever discovered in the city.

>> Officials believed the device was most likely dropped on the city by the US Navy back in the 1940s, when it then British colony was occupied by Japan.

>> Police say, the discovery prompted evacuations of more than 2, 000 people within a 500- meter radius. According to China's state- run news agency, Hong Kong police announced Friday, a bomb disposal team successfully disabled the device. And these kinds of discoveries are not all that uncommon. Hong Kong police say unexploded bombs have been found before in the city's hillsides and constructions sites over the last few decades. The Telegraph reports, a British shell was detonated in a controlled explosion in the city back in November. And in Europe, CNN reports a bulldozer struck a World War II bomb in Germany last month.

Unearthed bombs are so common in the country that many companies hire private bomb disposal teams for planned construction sites. Japan occupied Hong Kong from 1941 until the war has ended in 1945, before Britain resumed its control until 1997. Thanks for watching. I'm Lauren Zima.
