## Transcript

New research out of Finland is providing evidence that changes to some everyday activities could prevent Alzheimer's. A study of 1200 people at risk for dementia has found a group of lifestyle changes can reduce memory decline. The study's authors are calling this a recipe. Exercise, a healthy diet, plus regular brain training exercises and social activities, and you get a reduced risk of memory loss after just two years. The vice president of medical scientific relations at the Alzheimer's Association told reporters this is the first time researchers have been able to give people a guide for what can help prevent memory loss.

This is the first time we actually have a recipe that we can say this recipe works. You can try to follow this. And you should be able to see some results. To come to this conclusion, a team of researchers recruited 1, 260 participants between the ages of 60 and 77. Half were randomly assigned to what Time calls " an intensive lifestyle makeover ", complete with nutrition advice, an exercise trainer and a nurse or physician. Who closely monitor their medication intake. The other half still received appropriate health care but not nearly on the level as the first half. After two years the studies authors say the first half that got that lifestyle makeover did significantly better on a memory test than the second half did.

A professor of neurology and psychiatry at the mayo clinic in Arizona who was not involved in the study told USA today. The routine things, the things that are simple, have turned out to be protective. It keeps going back to the old advice from grandma. Exactly how these lifestyle changes affect the brain is unclear, but it's not exactly a discovery that healthy eating and exercise can improve long term health. The study's author say they plan to study the participants for seven years to see what the long- term effects of this recipe are, and to determine just how it affects the brain. The research was presented Sunday at the Alzheimer's Association International Conference.

Thanks for watching. I'm Loren Zena.
