Armor, supply trucks, artillery, even a helicopter briefly. Locals baffled, welcoming. Paratroopers from [ INAUDIBLE ] once said driving east and then north around the town of Slavyansk, held by pro- Russian militants. They're completing a task, said the officer, their orders changing. He's telling us he's from Odessa in the southwest of the country, and while we don't know where these troops are headed, they do tell us their commanders say their orders are changing in this highly volatile part of Eastern Ukraine. Further up the road, slowly signs of Ukraine's sovereignty returning. This checkpoint on the border between [ UNKNOWN ] and [ UNKNOWN ] regions. The police and local volunteers insisting they will fight. That may start here in Slavyansk. Russian media say it's encircled, Ukranian officials say they're retaking it. It doesn't sound like that from here. [ SOUND ] This amateur video, we can't confirm its authenticity, purporting to show one local risking himself to slow their advance. But it was south, in Kramatorsk, where the change was starkest. Days ago, pro- Russian militants stormed its police station. [ SOUND ] Now the barricades are being cleared away. The real local police are back in place, although they won't talk on camera. The captain said he was now with the people in delicate talks but wouldn't say if he still answered to Kiev. [ FOREIGN ]. A tide of local hostility to Kiev gathered near the Kramatorsk air field. [ SOUND ] Shots fired in the air as local men, one perhaps drunk, try to approach the newest arrivals. Ukrainian troops who flew in hours earlier. Gunfire was reported then, but few locals confirm Russian media reports of casualties. In many ways what's happened here has become an attraction for locals to come and look at but also a chance to voice their displeasure at this latest action by the Ukrainian government. [ FOREIGN ] We don't recognize that government's authority, he says. We're normal people without arms. They came in on helicopters, shot at peaceful people. After all this it's unlikely West will be friends with East. These limited signs of Kiev's authority landing where pro- Russian anger has lit a fire they'll struggle to extinguish.
