He sold over 20 million albums in the US alone. His new album Illuminations in stores November 15th. Let's talk about Illuminations. This album you worked with producer Rick Rubin on. He's worked with Metallica, Johnny Cash, and the Beastie Boys. >> Yes. Natural fit obviously, right? >> Natural Fit. Yes. Well that was my question. I mean how did this end up happening? >> You know he's somebody that everybody knows of. Everybody knows of his mythology and his legend, but hadn't met and we were introduced by a mutual friend as just a friendly lunch and didn't really expect anything more to come from it, but in that chat we really connected quite organically and realized that even though we came from very different backgrounds we had a lot in common. >> Well, what was that process like in terms of the way you guys worked together? >> Some things were a mutual learning experience. I mean for him, you know, coming into a room where, you know, he could stand in the middle of a 60- piece orchestra and that was new to Rick. And for me coming in the situation where Rick would say to me you know I know you wrote the song but do not tell any of these musicians how you want it played. They're gonna hear it right before they play it. Like that to me was kind of against my type A personality just because he's, you know, for a lot of it his thing was just let it blossom the way it's gonna happen and that was the very kind of Zen thing that he brought to it. >> And to give you the music you do because you have this amazing gift of a voice or where you drawn into that music and are you able to sing that way through discipline and passion? >> I was fortunate enough to have kind of seen shows that really were right in the realm of what my voice does naturally, and I would go seek great grand, you know, song time operatic musicals and I'd come home singing something at the park with George. At the same time I grew up listening to people like Annie Lennox and Peter Gabriel, Depeche Mode. You know having a classical nature about what I do it's important for me to have a producer that puts me on the long leash, but still can be outside of myself to say that's a useful influence and that's an influence that you will always have as a fan that you should never touch as an artist you know and because otherwise if you can become like a kid in a candy store. >> You sang everywhere. You sang at the World Series. You sang at the Oscars. You sang at the Vatican. You sang at the Nobel Prize Award ceremony. You know which of these amazing performances is meaningful to you and those? >> I've always been very surprised and very honored to sing at things that are way bigger than any one performance. You know and these are events that sometimes are quite, you know, historic. But you just say to yourself stopping around this. This is just like so beyond any note that you're gonna be singing out there. Just go and enjoy the moment and pay tribute in your own way. If I can bring a family member with me, it means a lot more to me because I know that we're sharing it together and it's something that I can relive through my family's eyes. >> You've done and you've done a bunch of other stuff. You've been on Glee which your publicist described to me as being a more creepy version of yourself. >> Definitely. >> 2 questions. 1 ) Are you single and 2 ) how about this New Directions? >> When they first wrote the part for me it was very much just like write down the middle. There wasn't anything like funny or weird about it and I thought well, if I'm gonna be myself at least like make it a Bizarro version you know. Let me kind of poke fun at myself. >> Dag, damn it. Now even I have to admit I'm a little confused as to what Sue was doing in this room. Wasn't the theme tonight supposed to be Celebrity Judges? >> Kiss my ass, Josh Groban. >> I take my music very, very seriously but I don't take myself very seriously and I think that sometimes fans can confuse if the music is serious that well you must be stale and you know snobby too. Anytime I get to kind of take the window out of the sales is nice. >> Josh Groban, thank you very much. >> Thank you.
