For the past few days 16- year- old Sumera [ unk ] has been in the city's doky neighborhood hard at work. >> In the first place we work, me and my mom and my brother then every 5 seconds someone says can I help, can I help? Please, let me help you. >> Before she knew it says Sumera her team had grown to 20 people in a kind of phase 2 of the Egyptian revolution as many as 2, 000 mostly local youth volunteers have been busy the last 3 weeks transforming the face of Cairo. While school is on hiatus they've been sweeping, cleaning, and painting the city back to life. >> Well, now we are making our country flag on each lamp, each lamp and it's something, it's a message. We start with upper one with red then another boy came with a white and the third one came with the black. >> Sumera's mom, Waidah Abdullah is doing much more than being a chaperon. She's got more paint on her clothes than anyone. >> Yes. See my shoes. >> Just a few weeks ago she says her family was fed up with Egypt's politics, corruption, and general lack of hope. >> They're managing to change because the youth feel very sad about being here then the country is dirty and well let's go away, education is not okay and after they get in, this feeling now they are totally changed. >> Waidah says the beautification of Cairo by its citizens is truly a grass roots effort and when they run out of paint they simply step into traffic, put their hands out, and ask for donations. They collected $ 600 in 2 days. >> Make them feel that they are sharing and what's going on, you know. So this guy he say may Allah make Egypt greater. -[ unk ] Abubakar Kala was walking by and stopped to admire Waidah Abdullah's efforts. >> It's excellent to do something, a good rule for your country. Egyptian President Mubarak this is so good. >> Waidah Abdullah says in the months to come she and her cohort of citizen helpers plan to bring their energy and paint cans to other Egyptian cities and a year from now she's thinking even bigger. She wants to open a recycling plant to keep Egypt streets cleaner on a permanent basis.
