## Transcript

[ MUSIC ] Some of the biggest companies in tech are making their moves into US health care, with titans like Amazon, Apple, Google, and Uber sharing their plans to disrupt an industry ripe for change. Spending in the $ 3. 3 trillion American health care system is expected to spike by another 5. 3 % this year in its annual trend of price hikes. And growing inefficiencies have frustrated providers and patients alike. While Silacon Valley's brightest succeed in disrupting industries as far reaching as book stores and taxi's, the healthcare system is a different animal all together. Healthcare is one of the most complicated industries possible to get involved in.

You have federal regulations, state regulations [ INAUDIBLE ] you have insanely complex relationships between the various players in the supply chain. On the other hand, you have to earn consumers trust when you're engaging in matters of literal life and death. [ MUSIC ] Each tech company is taking its own approach, betting that its strength can ultimately improve people's health, or at least make health care more efficient. Verily, part of Google's parent company, Alphabet, is reportedly trying to break into health care management And provide health insurance more efficiently. In January Amazon announced a partnership with JP Morgan and Berkshire Hathaway to lower health care cost for its employees.

Uber is trying to flip the script on the medical transportation industry. And Amazon spent $ 1 billion to up end the pharmaceutical industry with PillPack Whether or not tech companies succeed in disrupting health care depends on the ability to adapt their technologies to the industrys in particular needs. Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett belief the industry has a significant advantage saying this to CNBC. Well the goal is to deliver better care and to find better ways to take Cost out of the system while not impairing the quality of what people receive. And that's a enormously complicated.

It's not gonna be easy, but we're determined. We've got the money. We'll stick with it. Tech companies may have a lot to offer, but there are risks in embracing partners known for moving fast and breaking things. To get deep understanding of complicated healthcare issues that face Americans, Google and joint venture, Amazon, JP Morgan Chase, and Berkshire Hathaway, recruited top healthcare veterans to steer their respective ships. Poaching healthcare talent is probably one of the single most important things that tech companies can do if they truly do want. To disrupt various parts of healthcare.

This is such a complicated field and it requires people who have, if first hand experience with what the regulatory environment is. What it really feels like to provide that frontline of care to patients in order to be successful. Tech companies like Apple are known for creating products that people love. But can they actually succeed in driving prices down while creating a better health care experience for Americans? Tech disruption can definitely play a major role in bringing down the prices of health care, but this is another one of those areas where it's gonna take not just advancements in technology, but changes in policy While it's way too soon to tell to what tech's impact will be on the industry, it could be possible that Silicon Valley, not Capitol Hill, comes up with an answer to the nation's vexing healthcare problem, and not big pharma.
