## Transcript

Serena Williams is well on her way to joining the grand slam mom's club after fighting back against Camila Giorgi, securing her spot in the semi finals in Wimbledon on July 10th. She's already got 23 grand slam single titles to her name, but this would be her first since becoming a mother. The title would crown Williams as the fourth mother in history to win the prestigious title in 50 years of the open era. After giving birth to her daughter in September 2017, Williams took a break before getting back to the courts. She returned French Open in May but withdrew due to an arm injury. Now 36 years she's ready to continue her record shattered ways.

This could mark the eighth Wimbledon win of her career and the second Wimbledon win for a mother in over 130 years. But the struggle to compete post- motherhood hasn't been easy for Williams. Just two days before beating [ UNKNOWN ] in straight sets, the tennis legend tweeted a reality many working moms face, She took her first steps... I was training and I missed it. I cried. But competing against Rodina who's a mom to a five year old was also exciting for Williams. After her win she told reporters, " I knew we were both moms. So, it's really cool. You can be a mom. You can still play tennis and you can still be great ." This years singles draw featured a half dozen mothers including former number one and two time major champion Victoria Azerenka.

This fact presents progress as female tennis pros have historically struggled to find success after having a child. In the open era only three mothers have won the Grand Slam single's title. In 1973, Aussie's Margaret Court won the Australian, French and US opens after having her son. In 1980, Evonne Goolagong [ UNKNOWN ] became the only mother to win Wimbledon in 100 years. The Australian had previously taken the prize in 1971 at the age of 19. But the 1980 victory stands apart. Not only because she was a mother. But also because she was able to come back from an injury and win the final in a nail biting tie break.

Kim Clijsters of Belgium was the last mother to win a Grand Slam title nearly thirty years later She took the US Open in 2009 and made it to the quarter finals at Wimbledon in 2010. Now it looks like there's no stopping Williams in her quest to continue her reign as the greatest of all time. With her admitting at a recent press conference this. This is what makes me great. I always played everyone at their greatest So I have to be greater. Hats off to you mama.
