My, My name is Marcel and I'm partially a shell as you can see on my body. But, I also have shoes and a face. The character of Marcel is new. He is a little over a year old. So , he's new to me too. So, I like being Marcel cause its like a, discovering a new part of myself. It's a [ INAUDIBLE ] room. It's a bedroom, but I sleep in a piece of bread , so I just call it my bedroom. I was doing the character, and Dean, who wrote the book with me, made sort of a body for the voice that I was doing. So , he actually did, you know, made the shell with with the ion and all that. So, we had the character first and then we made a film of it. Cause , we just wanted to sort of, experiment with him and then play around. When we were making it we didn't have in mind that, you know, we would sort of , ah, make it for children. It was kind of like we were making for everyone and we found, after we made it, that is sort of appeals to like everyone from like, I don't know probably three year olds , to you know, Jenny's grandparents love it. We knew it would be a good picture book when we saw, how people were responding to it's sort of innocence and sweet and really vibrant nature. And, all of the picture books that I can remember really loving, have that sort of really unique, vitality to them. When we went to do, the book, we wanted to keep the loose, sort of loose feeling that the film had, but really explore his character and his life. Our original, idea for the illustrations was to do still photographs. Because, you know, we had made it as a film. We went, we after we looked at some you know, kids books that had stills and miniatures and stuff, we sort of decided that they seemed a little lifeless on the page. And so, we sorta wanted to find a, a different style of illustration that, that had some more life to it, had like kind of a pulse. We decided to , um, take a chance and make really rich oil paintings, sorta of photo- realistic oil paintings. But, the kind that when you see them, when you're a kid, you're like ," Is that real or is that a painting ?" and, and you're like ," Oh. I can't believe somebody could be that good at painting .". I think, people sort of wonder that about Marcel , anyway. Actually, three kids this morning just asked me , if he was real. That? That is Marcel's aquarium. He goes there to look at fish. [ LAUGH ] Dean took the photographs and did a day of shooting , lighting it , so that you can see from the morning into the nigh. And then, our publishers helped us to find a, a great painter. Name is Amy Lynn. And , she made these, these paintings for us. And she did, a, an extraordinary job. Every- time , we get to work in the world of Marcel, and with Marcel. It just it gives me a really good feeling. I, I hope that it's a feeling that people get when they read the book or watch the films. And, hopefully one day , um, he'll have a television show of his own, maybe a movie. Like to just keep making things with Marcel as long as it's fun.
