He's a langur on special assignment for the Indian government. He's in town to scare away red rhesus monkeys during the Commonwealth games in New Delhi. -[ Foreign Language ] >> The New Delhi Municipal Corporation has hired these langur to guard the National Stadium so that our foreign guests are not harmed by monkeys. >> Monkeys are a well- known nuisance in the city. With so many athletes in town, the government has mobilized thousands of policemen and army soldiers. But the soldiers aren't equipped to deal with monkeys. So, the government hired special handlers like [ unk ] who says, it takes at least 2 years to train a langur for the job. -[ Foreign Language ] >> First, we try to slowly get close by feeding and sitting next to them because, the closer we can get, the faster they will learn. Then, we make them walk and run for a day or two. Then, we tie a rope to them and train them to sit on a cycle or a motorcycle, shake hands and climb trees because a langur can go anywhere a monkey can go as well. >> The laws of nature helped, too. Bigger monkeys rule. -[ Foreign Language ] >> A monkey can jump 2 feet. A langur can jump at least 5 or 6 feet. They're stronger. >> Delhi's monkey problem isn't new. Hundreds of them run the streets causing mischief. Like cows, monkeys are holy for many Indians. Some people feed them and many worship the Hindu monkey god, Hanuman, even the main officer in- charge of guarding the games against monkeys. But monkeys can be aggressive, even deadly. They've snuck into houses, bitten people and reach havoc inside government buildings. A hoard of log monkeys killed a former deputy mayor of Delhi. And it's even risky for the special handlers. -[ Foreign Language ] >> Once, I was training the langur on a motorbike, but he caught hold of my pants from the back and bit my backside. Another time, I was feeding a langur and he bit my hand. So, they can be harmful to us even when they're training or when they're fully grown. >> Animal rights activist, Amit Chaudery, doesn't blame the monkeys. He says the problem is caused by human overpopulation and bad planning. >> The reason for the problem is encroachment by people on habitat, number 1. Number 2, destruction of habitat and, number 3, letting with the monkeys. You can dance with them. You can't say I'm gonna feed you every Tuesday and Saturday. [ unk ] get lost. I don't wanna see you. >> As for the langurs, Chaudery says they aren't fit to live in an urban habitat and they're not a long- term solution. But after a rocky start to the Commonwealth games and a litany of bad press, the organizers are taking no chances.
