## Transcript

[ MUSIC ] Every year at Time, we pick the 25 best inventions of the year. We did it again in 2013. Here are five of our favorites. Anki Drive is the toy that I dreamed of when I was a kid. Anki Drive are little cars that race around and around a track. Our app is coordinating the entire experience over Bluetooth low energy. The cars can control their speed. And they steer around the track by doing the same computations your brain does when you drive. We are using IOS devices not just as remote controls but as the brains behind animmersive real world experience. It's been about a century since New Yorkers [ MUSIC ] Could swim in the East River.

But they are bound to be able to do so again with the Plus Pool. The Plus Pool is a pool that actually floats in the river while people are swimming in it. And its got river water in it, and the river water is being purified by special filters. [ MUSIC ] The Argus Two is the first device that has been approved by the FDA to restore partial sight for the blind. The glasses pick up signals from the world around you. They send them to the computer which interprets them. The computer sends the signals to the implant in your eye which passes them on to your brain in the form of electronic signals, which show you just at this point rough shapes and the contrast between light and dark.

But it's the first step on the long road back to sight for the blind. South Korea has begun construction on what should be the world's first invisible skyscraper. This is a building that on one side has a set of cameras which pick up what's behind the skyscraper. Then it projects that on the other side of the skyscaper. So if you're looking from that side, what you see is not the skyscraper but an image of what's behind it. With the result that the skyscraper appears to disappear. [ MUSIC ] Inventions aren't just technological. They can also be biological. Case in point, the Australian Gastric Brooding Frog.

Unlike most other creatures on earth, the Gastric Brooding Frog gestates its young in its stomach. And when the female is ready to give birth, the offspring emerges from its mouth. The other thing about the Gastric Breeding frog is that it's been extinct for 30 years. Except now scientists in Australia have recreated it from old DNA and soon it will be hopping the Earth again. Now these are just five of Time's 25 best inventions. You can see these and 20 more in this week's issue of Time magazine.
