## Transcript

[ MUSIC ] People ask what sport I play and they're like track, basketball. I'm like, no I play water polo. Growing up it was a little bit of a surprise to people. [ MUSIC ] I grow up some part of Miami called the Redlands me and my four brothers and sisters learn to swim. Because, we had a pool in our house growing up. I started playing water polo when I was nine. It was just really fun. You try to stay in the shallow and because, we're scared to thread My highschool is pretty rigorous academically and when I was looking at colleges I wanted my college to challenge me as much as my highschool did.

I talked about it a lot with my mom. I think that wanting to be To be challenged is something that I learned from water polo and from my mom. I didn't wanna lose anything in my transition from high school to college. I started training with the national team while I was playing at Princeton. It was a little bit hard coming out here. I was the only one going to school or living on the east coast. [ MUSIC ] I did a lot of homework on the plane. It was good for me to come out here and establish a connection with the team and practice with them and still be able to go back and do my work and it was fun.

It was challenging though. [ MUSIC ] I decided to take a break from school and train for the Olympics Because this is a once- in- a- lifetime opportunity, and I was really proud to be invited. She caught my eye, actually before she even hopped in the water. She just looks like an amazing athlete. The combination of her length and her quickness, her ability to be able to read where the ball is coming And to be able to react so quickly to it. She has played this position of Goaly unlike anyone who has played this position before .

>> All the pressure on and saved by the goal keeper. Ashley Johnson with a fantastic save .

>> I think with being a part of this process and just being around these women everyday and training and training hard. It is my biggest accomplishment I think us as a team have so much potential and we're willing to push ourselves to achieve that potential. I definitely feel the responsibility to be a role model for other black people and minorities because there are so little of us in this sport. Just being myself, being black, draws more attention to me. But I didn't feel like looking different meant that I had to play any differently or had to prove anything to anybody. I felt like I could be myself and Play as well as anybody else.

As we get closer to the Olympics I just hope that the exposure reveals how intelligent and how athletic you have to be to play water polo and how fun it is to watch. Becoming an Olympian would be just the culmination of all my dreams and all my hard work that I've put it and it would be my mom's dream probably too. We wanna win gold. [ LAUGH ] We're going out there to win gold. [ MUSIC ] [ BLANK_AUDIO ]
