What's more than 13, 000 confirmed Ebola cases including 4, 900 deaths in West Africa, the outbreak is by any standard a disaster. But the IRS has just recently given the horrific outbreak the disaster treatment by making donating to Ebola relief and receiving financial assistance a much easier process. we have to work together at every level, federal, state and local. And we have to keep leading the global response. At the urging of President Obama the IRS will let people effected by the Ebola crisis in West Africa exclude relief payments from their gross income. That means that any aid that American's in affected areas receive from medical care or relocation for example.

Would be tax free. The IRS has also eased regulations on what are known as leave based donations for Ebola victims in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. Those leave based on nations at companies that permit them allow employees to turn their paid time off. Such as vacation or sick days into cash charitable donations made on their behalf. These were the same actions taken by the government agency, after Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Sandy, and the Haiti earthquake. This is, however, the first time the IRS has instituted these tax rules for a disease. It's no secret, raising money for Ebola has been difficult.

The amount of money raised to fight the West African crisis, pales in comparison to many natural disasters that affect a similar number of people. According to ABC, Americans, alone, donated more than [ UNKNOWN ]. $ 4 billion to the relief effort after Hurricane Katrina when about 1, 800 people were killed in the wake of the disaster. According to the United Nations the United States has donated about $ 312 million to the Ebola relief effort. Which is more money than the World Bank, European Commission, and United Kingdom combined. Fortunately, the Ebola outbreak appears to be slowing down. World Health Organization Assistant Director General Bruce Aylward confirmed Wednesday he is seeing a slowing rate of new cases.
