[ MUSIC ] And the results are in for this year's NBA draft lottery, with the PHoenix Suns having dibs on the first pick The team had the best odds for the top slot and that's what they've got. But things can still change in the draft order since teams have room to trade their pace until draft day on June 21st. The lottery is one of the great oddities in professional sports and has more in common with the Powerball drawing than the typical fan fare associated with major sporting events. But, where those fourteen ping- pong balls land is perhaps the most consequential ten minutes in the NBA calendar.

While other leagues outright reward losing teams with preferable picks, the NBA determined their order through a weighted game of chance, where numbered ping- pong balls determine a team's order, based off of a thousand possible combinations. The worst team gets the most chances, with 250 combinations for a 25 % chance at first pick. But this was the final year for this setup. In 2017, the MBA approved a new waiting system that will go into effect next year to prevent teams from tanking. Following the process that gained particular notoriety through Sam Hinkie and the Sixers. But in the meantime the Dallas Mavericks, which openly admitted to racing to the bottom this season, scored the fifth slot in the lottery this year after finishing with the league's third worst record.

The open tanking efforts by the Memphis Grizzlies were rewarded earning the team a Top four pick. However, starting next year, teams with the three worst records from the previous season will each have a 14 % chance at the number one pick, significantly decreasing their chances for getting a great return for a losing streak. After the great tanking era, fans can put that in the rearview and look foward to a new chapter for the MBA. [ MUSIC ]
