It's the sequel to a 2011 game called Deus Ex: Human Revolution. It's set in the near future cybernetic, quasi dystopia. So, you see drones here, and this is Prague In the Czech Republic. You play as a cybernetically augmented human being named Adam Jensen. And he can unlock keypads, he can open doors. And then because the game supports multiple approach pass, sometimes you can just jump over things and bypass the hacking unlocking games entirely. Which is what I have done here. I've already been through parts of this area so I'm showing you a mission in which Adam has to infiltrate a building. Because he's trying to connect with somebody whose in prison and in a basement below. And so you can climb up onto the roof so you can use special abilities like this cybernetic augmented vision. That let's you see Potential enemies lying in wait. You can clamor around on these electric boxes and across these additional rooftops, you can see some people I took out there below. You can open vents. You can crawl through ventilation shafts. You can find just a myriad number of ways to Move through these environments. And this is the thing to know about mankind divided. It is has taken what human revolution was already doing which was facilitating multiple ways of dealing with the situation. Stealth, action, variations there between it's taken that and it's get a rated and just Made everything better, particularly the combat. If you are interested in approaching the game from an action standpoint, the action game is better, the weapons are more interesting, the tactical AI is vastly improved. But if you're like me, you prefer to play these games almost predominantly stealth- based, not killing anybody, and trying to think through the puzzles that the environments are presenting, then I think Mankind Divided is just a trove of opportunities. As I wrote in my review, everything feels purpose- built in these cobblestone streets and in crumbling baroque facades patrolled by armored cops and over- curious drones. Moveable garbage bins or cardboard boxes might hide a wall vent or a passageway. Hackable apartment doors conceal valuables and laptops with potentially diverting vignettes. Construction elevators lead to alt paths along rooftops or through windows, which are sometimes ways of gaining surreptitious access to heavily patrolled areas If you peer closely at the parameters of an environment or scenario, you'll often find you only glimpsed their elasticity. [ BLANK_AUDIO ] So what to make of Mankind Divided's political positions. This was a game that was marketed, to a certain extent, On the basis of signs like aug lives matter which is clearly a call- out to black lives matter. There was an event in the last game that drove a massive wedge between augmented and non augmented humans in your dealing with the ramifications of that to a certain extent in the sequel. And so the question is should this game be taking a strong political position or is this just hyperbole use to sort of market the game and make it seem like it's taking interesting political positions? This is a tricky thing to answer because it depends so much on what it is that you want from a game like this. I think that the predominant mode of thinking right now in game design, and it's a more recent one is that games shouldn't tell you what to think. Games should present you with scenarios and allow you to piece together your own response. What I can tell you is that it's there, but it's not in the main. It's not the story itself that is shoving Political positions and ethical stances down your throat. You have to be willing to go looking for it. You have to be interested enough and engaged enough by the environments the game's presenting, to wanna go into these rooms, and hack the laptops, and read the emails, and start piecing together the back narrative that is absolutely there. And is absolutely dark and brutal. But even if you strip away all of that political and ethical nuance and you just think about this in terms of the game. As a game, divorced of its story, Mankind Divided is a tremendously multi- path experience that you can approach each problem posed in so many distinct and satisfying ways. It's definitely the series continued triumph.
