## Transcript

hello everyone nice to meet you thank you for coming today [ MUSIC ] [ FOREIGN ] Since 1986 Honda has been developing robots. [ CROSSTALK ] And we thought that if we can create a robot that can assist people we thought that we would be able to change How people would live in the future. Honda thought long and hard about what's the best shape for something that's going to help people in a human environment. Ends up, the human shape is the best. And the first thing we really needed to get straight was one of the things that we as human beings take We're at it everyday, and that's walking. [ FOREIGN ] [ CROSSTALK ] When people are running they maintain balance by using their upper body.

[ SOUND ] And people do that unconsciously. We needed to realize that unconscious movement of people from the engineering capability. And that was one of the biggest technical challenges, but also it was fun. The ASIMO development engineers failed, and then failed agin, and failed again. Kept learning, kept kicking out the ladder and then in the year 2000 we introduced first version of ASIMO. [ FOREIGN ]. [ MUSIC ] [ SOUND ] In order to make a robot that can co- exist with people, we think that is necessary for robots to be equipped with similar capabilities as humans. [ FOREIGN ] [ CROSSTALK ] Not only walking, Awesome- o was able to run and climb stairs, and jump, and he's now capable of doing that.

I'm very proud of that achievement and those technologies. [ MUSIC ] [ FOREIGN ] [ CROSSTALK ] So in the future, we wanna make Awesome- o to be useful in the household setting. Like kids help with the chores. ASIMO's sensors in the hand determine the force needed to pick up the paper cup as well. But not only reading them to allow it to pick up the cup, but also making sure that it doesn't use too much force and crush the paper cup. We are closer than ever before, to actually having a situation where ASIMO can be a helper to all kinds of people in need. [ FOREIGN ] [ CROSSTALK ] So as we study more about robots and improving its functions we also found how wonderful and how remarkable people were, and that is also interesting for me.
