## Transcript

According to some estimates, three quarters of the infrastructure that we need by 2050 has yet to be built. According to other estimates, we need to build one Manhattan's worth of concrete every month until the year of 2050. Concrete is a composite materials consisting of aggregate and cement and water. The analogy that I usually use is cement is the flour, and concrete is the cake. So you need to have the flour to make the cake, and the flour works as a binder to put everything together. Cement and concrete production needs a lot of energy, depending on the type of the infrastructure that the cement and concrete are fashioned into, who will have different use phase emissions associated with the concrete and cement.

There's going to be this huge volume of carbon dioxide that we will have to deal with and do something with as a society. So I started out from the place of looking at, okay? What could we turn all the CO two into? Concrete is being produced at roughly 30 billion tons every single year, which is more than anything else on the planet. Now, it turns out that there is a chemical process that has been developed by nature that allows you to turn CO two by combining it with certain minerals into a cementitious product. C arbonation is a physicochemical reactions in concrete and generally in cement based products.

Without any interventions, the concrete that is exposed to the atmosphere can sequester CO two throughout its life cycle. Our innovation within this process is to take the same chemistry that nature has developed over billions of years, and we accelerate it by a factor of roughly 10 million. We do that by temperature, by pressure, and by a pparetory set of accelerants that we're using in the process. Essentially, what happens in our process is you put in CO two, you put in water and you put in rock powder. Chemistry happens and you get out a different type of rock powder, which then contains the CO two, which has been molecularly bound in the mineral matrix, and it keeps the CO two permanently stored, and suddenly you have a very highly useful material at your hands.

And right now we're constructing our demonstration plant in Rotterdam. I in the Netherlands, which will give us 1-10 tons of product per day. Next step from there on is to build the first commercial scale facility, which we are already in the early basis of. Our current mission with the company is to be there to restore the Earth's carbon balance by 1 billion tons by the year 2050. Concrete exists anywhere around the world. Knowing about how to get the most benefit out of the use of these valuable products, I think it's our goal as individual members of our society. We believe it is almost an obligation for us to do so and actually build in a way that helps solve the problem rather than making it worse.
