S. Food and Drug Administration has approved a new drug that could extend the lives of adults who had heart failure. The drug called Entrusto is manufactured by the Swiss company Novartis. The drug is designed for patients whose hearts cannot pump enough blood to support the rest of the body. Novartis says the drug could prevent those patients from having to go to the hospital. And allow them to live longer, more productive lives. The FDA's announcement comes 10 months after a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine showed Intrusto, which did not have a name, significantly reduced the risk of heart failure compared to an earlier drug. David Epstein, who heads Novartis's pharmaceutical division didn't hold back his excitement. Telling the New York Times, this is one of those once- in- a- decade kind of breakthroughs, to get a drug that extends life so sustainably. The drug is not without side effects. The FDA says it could cause low blood pressure, high blood potassium levels, and poor kidney function, as well as the risk of an allergic reaction. Today, heart failure is among the most formidable health problems in the United States. Over 5 million Americans suffer from heart failure. In 2009, the disease was at least a contributing factor in 1 in 9 American deaths. And the condition costs the US about $ 32 billion annually. Entresto isn't just a medical breakthrough for Novartis It's also good news for the company's profit margin.
