## Transcript

All eyes were on the Pope this weekend as he made his first trip as pontiff to the Holy Land, and while the Vatican insisted this trip was strictly about religion, it's hard to ignore the politics. He's traveling with a Rabbi and an Imam, a first for any Pope. His visit comes a month after US backed peace talks aimed at resolving the Israeli Palestine crisis collapsed. Francis called the stalemate unacceptable. While his visit is seen as largely symbolic, some hope the Pope can use his moral authority to make an impact on the conflict. He's the Pope, if he can't do it who can? That kind of visible, photo opportunity could send a message the Pope could perhaps, create something, some momentum.

Francis seemed to give symbolic approval for statehood when he traveled to the West Bank directly by helicopter, instead of passing through Tel Aviv as other popes have. He then made an unscripted visit to this controversial wall that separates Israeli and Palestinian territories. A wall Palestinians say represents apartheid. It was an image that probably didn't sit well with Israeli leaders, but what followed was a series of powerful gestures of support for Israel. The Pope visited a holocaust museum with Israeli president Shimon Peres and prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He kissed the hands of survivors.

He also prayed at the western wall and left a note between the cracks. An expert on Christian Jewish relations told Time, gestures like these do carry significance, and we, because we live in an internet age which cultivates superficial thought, have no idea how powerful these can be. But in the Middle East, it certainly resonates very powerfully. Pope Francis also invited Perez and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to pray at the Vatican. Both men accepted. I'm Elizabeth Hagedorn.
