It had taken off from LaGuardia Airport just minutes before. Engine failure, most likely after hitting a flock of birds, forced the pilot to make an emergency landing in the river's frigid waters. Within minutes, rescue operations underway. Ferry and rescue boats brought survivors from the plane to shore in New Jersey and to this building, on the Manhattan Piers, not far from the USS Intrepid Aircraft Carrier Museum. The airbus 8320 was en route to Charlotte, North Carolina, with just over a 150 passengers and crew members. >> It would appear that the pilot did a masterful job of landing the plane in the River. >> New York Mayor, Michael Bloomberg, said the pilot told him he walked the plane twice to make sure all passengers were off, before the plane submerged. Dozens of fire and police cars were at the scene. Survivors were treated for hypothermia and shock on the scene, and some were rushed to nearby hospitals. Crew members say everyone survived the crash. But hours after the incident, an official headcount cannot be confirmed.
