## Transcript

India has won! That was the message from Bharatiya Janata Party, or BJP leader, Narendra Modi, after he and India's opposition party won a so- called people's victory Friday during national elections, according to partial results. The controversial and business- minded Modi, who is 63, emerged victorious. After five weeks of voting, and more than 500 million ballots cast, he will be India's next Prime Minister. Modi's win was considered a landslide victory for the BJP, as the country's opposition party looks set to take at least 280 of the 545 seats in India's parliament. The reigning Congress Party has conceded defeat to the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party, basically ending Congress' decade- long hold.

On the other side of things, Modi's opponent and the Congress party's vice president, Rahul Gandhi, accepted responsibility for his party's defeat. Gandhi's family is a political dynasty that has dominated Indian politics for decades. It's been an incredible rise for Narendra Modi, a right- wing politician who India hopes will help revive its flagging economy. Which is one the largest tasks awaiting the soon- to- be Prime Minister. As Time explains, Modi will take over an economy badly in need of change. Growth in the last fiscal year is expected to clock in under 5 %, well below the 8 % to 9 % pace enjoyed only a few years ago.

Such sluggish growth just won't cut it if India intends to lift the incomes of its 1. 1 billion, still generally poor people. But Modi ran a campaign on the so- called Gujarat model of development, named after the Indian state he's led for 13 years. CNN reports it's his track record of economic success that Indian voters look forward to. Growth in Gujarat has been around 10 % while growth in the rest of India has actually slowed down. The hope is that he is able to replicate that model of development across the rest of India. Also on Friday, Indian stocks rose to a record high, which according to the Wall Street Journal, reflects optimism in the new government to usher in an economic revival.

Thanks for watching. I'm Christian Bryant.
