All of the rebels in the room. Thank you, it's incredible to be surrounded by all of you. As a 13 year old, growing up in Los Angeles, California. This very diverse place. I was living in a motel with my single parent, with my mother and five of my sibling and that's when ballet found me. Something that my mother instilled in me, as a biracial women herself and me being biracial was that the world was going to view me as a black women no matter what I decided to do. I had no idea that that was going to be my truth at some point in my life. When I moved to New York City at seventeen years old, and joined American Ballet Theatre, and realized I was the only the African- American woman in a company of AD dancers, and that went on for a decade. It was then that I realized, wow, this is not a world I belong in. It was around 23 years old that I saw a documentary on a company called the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. And there was a dancer in it that spoke. And her name was Raven Wilkinson. And I have tell you a little bit of her story because she's been such an influence on me. I never saw a ballerina that who looked like me before, it doesn't mean that they don't exist. Raven Wilkinson was the first African American ballerina to dance in a major elite international company. She was chased out of the company by the KKK in the 1950's, ended up moving to Europe for the rest of her career. She lives two blocks from me now, and she's in her late eighties, and she's become an incredible role model for me and someone who has sparked this. Curiosity for me to try and open up the doors for the history of African- American ballerinas that I feel is just not told. It just this hidden history for some reason and I feel that I'm here to be a vessel for all of those brown ballerinas who have come before me And set this incredible path for me to exist where I am today. To have a voice to speak on diversity in the arts and especially in classical ballet. So this toast is to Raven Wilkinson, to all the incredible African American ballerinas who have paved the way for me. And to all of the brown ballerinas in the future. Hm. So, thank you.
