## Transcript

You have run for president yourself before. I think I did. Yes I remember that [ LAUGH ]. And uh, when you look at the Republican party, at the debate last night do you think this is a party where I, where I still belong? Do you recognize that? I mean you would be in that vanishing moderate wind [ LAUGH ] [ UNKNOWN ] Republican party. Where do you exist now? You see, I I thought it was fascinating when I went to the Reagan Library. I worked for Ronald Reagan, and Ronald Reagan is one of my heroes, and I was Associate Attorney General for him in Washington. U. S. Attorney. Wrote some speeches for him.

Got to know him. I'm on the board of the Reagan Library now. I know Mrs. Reagan, rea, really well. I've gotten to know her much better. So I feel I'm a Republican because of him. I mean, he always used to say, " My 80 % friend is not my 20 % enemy ." I wish you could have been there last night. I think he would have, he would have finished it by telling all of them, finally what Newt Gingrich said, to stop attacking each other and just start explaining what you would, what you would do. And I feel comfortable as a Republican because I get to define it the way I want to define it and that means I, I, I have a real hard time getting nominated.

I mean, I'm, I'm, I consider myself to be pretty financially and economically conservative. Pretty conservative about, about national security and the military, but I'm a social moderate. And that makes me difficult to get nominated in the Republican party, not because there aren't a lot of Republicans that agree with me, but because the Republicans who tend to participate in a primary are the most are the most emotionally You know one sided like in a democratic primary, kinda moves to the left. But I'm a realist I look at my options and I find more things about the Republican outlook on then economy the Republican outlook on national security that I agree with then I agree with on the democratic side.

So that's how I end up being a Republican. And I think they would all be better off if they agreed with me but they don't. [ LAUGH ] I think they would have a better chance of governing and I a of course I came up with a different way than they did. I was a mayor a Republican mayor in a city that is overwhelmingly democratic so if I didn't compromise. [ UNKNOWN ] total failure, I mean if I wanted tax cuts I would have to find social programmes that I could invest in so I could get the Democratic majority in the city council, maybe I didn't want to invest in those social programmes but I had to do it because I had to make a calculation and it is tax cuts more.

If you've been governor of a very conservative state, you don't have to make those, you don't learn how to make those compromises. So as I look at these candidates I'm gonna look at the ones that I think can grow, you know grow the best in being president. Cuz to be a president you have to, you can be very principle You can be very audiological, but ultimately you have to know how to compromise, you have to know how to make a deal. And so I have to see if, who of those candidates is the best at doing that.
