## Transcript

[ MUSIC ] [ CROSSTALK ] Our idea was very simple was to just fill a new little video piece form our balcony each day in the name of art so the very next day we invited all of our friends up I got a little camera and a little microphone and I filmed The first ever show. One, two, three [ INAUDIBLE ] [ NOISE ]. I thought I'd film the traffic going down the street or people walking up and down the street. But we invited a couple of friends of ours who were in bands to come up and play. [ MUSIC ] And once we did that we started getting contacted by bands from all over the country that wanted to come up and play in our balcony.

[ MUSIC ] And so I just figured, we might as well let this do it's own thing. So if it's gonna become a music website, let it become a music website. Six years after it's launch. Balcony TV has become an international music franchise. Their videos, which showcase bands playing on balconies around the world, have been watched over 30 million times and are produced in over 40 cities on six continents. [ FOREIGN ] The charm of Balcony TV is that it does a lot of these local artists, a global audience, even if it is a small one. Steven Origen is the creator of Balcony TV. He's moved from his balcony in Dublin to Dogpatch Labs in New York City, and now coordinates dozens of crews from around the world.

It's quite a charming thing to be able to just click in to Belkey's Beach, St. Petersburg. And see the artists on the ground in St. Petersburg. [ MUSIC ] Any show that would probably come from there probably has it, a Russian name or something like that, but you wouldn't have, no idea even how to search for. I don't. For the first time since its launch, Balcony TV has caught the attention of big investors. Last summer Steven received $ 750, 000 in venture capital funds. The difficulty is how do you keep it independent and cool, and yet just improve the, the, the, the product if you will. But if we get it right, I think we actually are in a great position to become An ultimate new broadcasting platform for music.

There are dozens of other websites that follow a similar blueprint to Balcony Tvs. Some notable examples are the takeaway shows in France [ MUSIC ]. And the black cab sessions in London [ MUSIC ] They all feature musicians giving stripped- down performances in unusual spaces. From cabs in London. [ MUSIC ]. To bus stops in Seoul [ MUSIC ] And on balconies in Brooklyn. Tonight, the harmony- driven trio Apollo Run is playing their latest single, For Balcony to Beat Brooklyn. Sound was. Which lays claim to one of the most breathtaking backdrops of all the syndicates. How often do you get to, play on the rooftop with you know, the cityscape of Manhattan in the background you know?

Yeah. [ MUSIC ] There's no compensation for performing on Balcony TV, Apollo Run is playing for a few beers and a chance to impress a new audience [ MUSIC ] Part of our live show is Pre part harmony, but sometimes that gets lost in the mix so acoustic opportunities like these are great for us. [ MUSIC ] The band is good. They know how to stand in front of a microphone. They know how to stand back. They understand where the equipment is and stuff you know what I mean. It proves that they can actually play live. [ MUSIC ] Can't do it on the balcony, cant' do it any where. [ MUSIC ] For Thaigs, [ SOUND ] this is Jacob Templet in New York.

That was rat as hell.
