## Transcript

A lot of adults now have a huge burden of student debt. Are there things they can do to get debt forgiven or at least the monthly payments reduced? If you are say, in your late 30s, 40s, or later and you still are grappling with student loan debt, there are a number of things that you can do. One is that you can look to your employer. So, let's say somebody works for the Federal government. There's a great program administered through OPM, the Office of Personell Management. And they have something called the Federal Student Loan Repayment Program. And essentially, the government will repay up to $ 60, 000 worth of your student loans.

The catch of that is that you have to work. You have to Be an employee of a federal agency. And, frankly, there are dozens and dozens, at least 80 agencies all across the country, you don't have to be in DC to get this benefit. But, they will repay your student loans. And what if you're not a federal government employee? Good question. So, some other people, again when I say look to your job or your line of work, there are other specific type of work that can qualify you for loan forgiveness. So people who are in service industries and the public interest. Cops, firefighters, doctors or nurses who work in areas where there is a critical shortage of health care workers.

Those individuals can be eligible for loan forgiveness. Some people are gonna think about consolidating their loans. Refinancing their loans through smart ways. Literally there are a number of student loan companies out there now that are helping students of any age, former students who were borrowers to refinance. Against their student loans, and it's essentially for those who often have good credit, have decent jobs, but they're paying a higher rate than otherwise they would qualify for, so they refinance through these lender and they're able to get better rates, lower terms, and pay those student loans off faster.

Thanks for joining us, Lynette. Thank you for having me. [ MUSIC ]
