Here he is in his vegetable garden, one of his favorite places. [ LAUGH ] I loved his zebra bathing suit. My grandparent's were married for over 60 years. Family was the most important thing in their lives. Everything was centered around their family. We all celebrated Grandpa's 85th birthday together in Florida. He was happiest being with his wife, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Grandpa was filled with more joy than anyone I've ever met. I can still hear him moaning with delight over this cheeseburger. My grandparent's always seemed so glamorous to me. They loved to dress up and go out. Here they are with my grandfather's sister, Aunt Doris and her husband Al. I loved my Aunt Doris. I obsessively save all of my favorite answering machine messages. Jillian, it's Aunt Doris. I just got those pictures. I'm out of my mind with them. I think they're the greatest, and you too for sending them to me, thanks love. Love you. My grandmother is sitting here with her two favorite friends Aunt Doris and Aunt Dorothy I call them the golden girls. I began photographing my grandparent's because I knew this time wouldn't last forever and I desperately wanted to hold on to it. Thanksgivings were the most memorable family gatherings. We used to celebrate them in the house I grew up in. This is the moose my father shot when I was six years old. I was too scared [ LAUGH ] to get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom because of the stuffed moose head. Of all the guests we anxiously awaited on Thanksgiving day, the arrival of my grandparent's caused the most excitement. They were our royalty. I think my father and grandpa Irving looked forward all year to the annual turkey carving. Grandpa Irving's absolute favorite part to eat was the tuchus. My mom took such pride in every detail of the planning, and relished how her husband and father bonded on this holiday. I call this, turkey coma. This is my nephew with his grandmother Carol my sisters mother- in- law. Mom always makes Carol an apple martini. Carol's mom, Munna always came to our Thanksgivings as well, she lived to be 99. Grandpa used to grab grandma's breast and say the family jewels, the family jewels. My cousin, Jamie, is a dancer. Here we are in the living room of my other cousin, Leena's house. I'm so fascinated by new houses that are made to look old. Leena is here with her two daughters, Gail and Amanda. Gail just got in trouble because she was hiding her boyfriend in her bedroom. Leena was upset that she was dating somebody who wasn't Jewish. Grandma is here pinching Nolan's cheeks. Its Father's day which is another holiday we celebrate annually at my parents home. I found my nephew Cooper hiding in the bar. This is Cooper with the Wheat Thin's, it looks like he's doing a beauty treatment. My mom was a real daddy's girl, she worshiped her father. I call this the apple martini kiss. My mom doesn't like me taking pictures of her without makeup on. My sister asked me to take pictures for her holiday cards. She dressed my nephews in matching sweaters with their initials on them and got Bailey, the dog groomed. She didn't choose this one. This is Cooper and Nolan, my sisters children. After she got married she moved to a suburb next to the town where we grew up Cooper and Nolan had a double birthday party. Their cake was a soccer field, with all of their friends cheering them on in the stadium. My sister and all of her childhood friends have children around the same ages. They've formed a community, not unlike the one we had. My nephew is learning how to ride his bike here. He's got the training wheels, helmet, and my mom chasing him. This party was the last one my grandfather was alive for. Grandpa lived to see the birth of his seventh great grandchild. This is Slater's circumcision, my dad is holding him. As for me, I never thought I'd get married. I certainly didn't think I'd have a traditional wedding. And here I found myself, a year after my grandfather passed away. Doing exactly what I said I'd never do. I thought the only way to get through the wedding planning was to photograph it, this is Harriet, the wedding planner, she's here with my parents at the tasting, nobody messes with Harriet. Mom loved planning the wedding with Harriet, I now understand why people don't make it to the altar. Dorothy has helped take care of my grandparent's for almost two decades. Now it's just Dorothy and grandma. Dorothy is sitting in my grandfather's place in their living room. I look at this and just wonder what she is thinking and feeling here. My mom created the kind of home that her parents did, a safe place for all the kids to come and play. A kind of utopia. I always felt like I was somehow looking in on someone else's family though. This is Farrah and her father Jason. Jason is one of my mom's oldest friends. Farrah's mother left at a very young age. This is visiting day at my nephew's sleepaway camp, a camp my other grandfather owned for fifty years. The same camp that I got kicked out of. My cousin Amanda had her debutante ball last year. I didn't know Jews could be debutantes. My sister bought my father and nephews, all matching bathing suits. My sister Ally, never really likes how she looks when I photograph her. My dad loves having grandsons. Our home is all girls. This was last Father's day. My aunt Phyllis just got back from Florida. She's my mom's older sister. They've gotten a lot closer since my grandfather passed away. My grandmother's health has really deteriorated since my grandfather died. My grandma has never been the same without my grandfather. My grandfather's clothes are in his closet, and everything is exactly the way he left it. Dorothy, makes sure my grandma eats enough. Grandma Bea has had a standing nail appointment with Maria every other Monday for decades. She can barely see, but still chooses the colors according to the seasons. I came to pick grandma up to celebrate her 90th birthday. When I came back into the bathroom, she had fallen asleep. My parents bookshelf have these cutout figures from a trip my grandparent's took to New Mexico. They dressed up in matching outfits and took these studio pictures. They brought home a set for the whole extended family. It now feels like it was from another life. I can still hear my grandfather's voice. Jillian, my love, this is Grandpa.
